How to save system sound preference?

Just upgraded to Snow. I noticed that my sound setting resets everytime i shutdown. I used to save it back in Leopard. I have an external speaker system hooked up to my MacPro. Any ideas?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Thanks for that suggestion - it didn't do what I wanted, but it was interesting:

  • There are two files, com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist. The former seems to be a control list for possible input/output sources, the latter enumerates current default input/output devices. Neither says anything about volume settings.
  • These files did not get automatically recreated, at least not by changing the output volume.
  • After deleting these files and restarting, the reboot seemed to access the CD drive, which it never did before, (?? I'm not making this up!) and the volume was at mid-range instead of very low. My volume settings were still not saved.
  • All things considered, I restored the two files.

Good idea restoring those orginal plists 😉

I only suggested trying to recreate those audio plists because I interpreted your original post and this entire thread as you were loosing your audio output selection preference. No where did I interpret it as you were loosing your audio volume setting.

So, now that that's clear I have to ask the question, how old is your machine? The reason for that question is because the audio volume is saved in pram and perhaps your pram battery is getting little low. I'm grasping at straws here but I don't immediately have any other thoughts (you said you tried resetting pram so I can't suggest that again).

[I just noticed this thread seemed to change from the original poster]

So just to make sure I understand this thread...😕

ervzman is the original poster of this thread who really did have a output device problem so recreating the /Library/Preferences/Audio plists fixed him. So my original interpretation was indeed correct.

Philip Keller didn't have a output device problem, he has a volume problem which is as yet unresolved.
