i've seen on the apple website that you can use the apple remote with the ipod 4th generation. how does it work? because isn't the apple remote an ir device? or does it work off bluetooth? some advice on how to use the apple remote would be great. thanks.

You also need Apple's Universal Dock. The description of the remote says:

I completely missed the universal dock requirement as well. Wish it had popped up as a you must order a universal dock with remote for it to work. Spent last hour trying to figure out why remote won't work and getting really frustrated.

Well, that doesn't pop up because it also works with the Macs.
If you order an iPod Touch and a remote on the same order, you would think they could havea pop up to let you know that it won't work without a universal dock. Customer service.
I see now. Apple just hasn't thought of that. If they see this I'm sure they will do that.
