email to company

I have a few entries in Address Book where I've checked the box "company" to list the entry as such (no name is entered)

Is there a way to send an email to that company without have to begin typing the email address? I would like to start typing the company name, and have the address auto fill in Mail - the same way it does for sending to a "name" (vs sending to "company")

Thank you

Hi Connie,

I didn't see your post until just now. I haven't been in this forum area for a while.

Here is what you do. Enter the address card just as you normally would for all fields you desire.

When you enter the e-Mail address, use this form:

AlanCorp <HelpDesk@alancorp.com>

Notice the " <" & " >" surrounding the e–Mail address? And the Name characters before it. All this goes in the e-Mail address field.

This will allow you to have a company name in the address book w.o a person listed. And still match against Mail's type match feature.

Well, I bumped into the SAME problem, and I am sorry to say:

A. Sorry, but he solution you suggested, Alan, does NOT work... I tried it with several of my company listings, nothing worked, even after I saved and quit Address Book, and quit Mail to launch it again....

B. We must agree that Apple should fix this bug in an ELEGANT way, so that we don't have to find all kind of "smart" workarounds...

I use this all this time and It always works fine. So I am bit perplexed. You are saying that if you enter this format all in the address books e-Mail field, then you go to type a match for Alancorp it will not find it?

Here is what it looks like in action. The first shot is an address book card, the second is a new e-Mail address entry field search.

I completely agree that the company field should return a match. And I have written Apple to this effort. You may want to do the same. However the e-Mail format that I gave is a standard.

Sorry, Alan, but this Mail program seems even MORE BUGGY than I realized before....

A. Yes, when I create a NEW card in my Address Book with the "Test Company" and assign the email address the way you suggested, then YES, Mail would recognize that one address no problem.... But wait....

ONLY if I type the name as "test" it will catch it... If I type "Test" --- forget it.... So maybe Mail does not recognize the NAME of the company (which is saved as "Test"), only the email address (which is saved with a lower case "t")... That's not so good...

B. Going back to my already-saved company names, and making the change you suggested does NOT help... But...

C. But then when I type in an old name, it depends HOW I start typing it... If the name was saved starting with a capital letter, Mail wont catch it, but if I type it starting with a LOWER case, Mail will catch... So -- again -- you'd think that Mail recognizes only email addresses in your address book, not names of companies, right?

D. WRONG... I type in a name of a company, Mail does not catch. So I start typing in the EMAIL ADDRESS of that company, Mail STILL does not catch it.... -- And this is after I made the change per your suggestion...

MAYBE IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON WITH OUR LIVES, AND CHOSE ANOTHER MAIL PROGRAM? What do you say?

OK, so here is my solution, not very elegant but it's working...

Just add the company name (or the first part of it) to the "FIRST" field, as if the company name is a person's first name.

Than Mail is back to working as it should have been working in the first place.

Hope this help. For now, at least, till our friends at Cupertino care to fix their bug.
