After installing an ssl certificate for a domain on my server (x-serve PPC 10. Apache 1.3) any url for that domain entered that does not include https:// has /groups/workgroup/ appended to the url...
My attempts to alias or redirect all http://mydomain.com to https://mydomain.com have failed.
Any clues anyone?

You'll need to post specifically what you redirects you have setup for your non-ssl and ssl site.
ssl certificate causes /groups/workgroup/ to be appended to the url...
