jerky playback

All of a sudden I'm getting jerky playback of video. I've tried the usual fixes: trash preferences, delete render files, repair permissions, repair disk, but nothing has helped. This happens in timeline and also with individual clips in the viewer, on all projects, playing from a variety of hard drives. It may be a coincidence, but it started happening today right after I played a few of the videos on the new google video site. Also, when I open the Mac Finder, the columns are slightly jerky, snaping back and forth laterally, which leads me to guess the problem might be in my system rather than in FCP, so a re-install of FCP might not help. My other programs are working normally. Any suggestions? I'm running the latest FCP 5.0.4.

Thanks for the quick replies and suggestions, which I have done, but it didn't help – the video playback still is jerky, stopping and freezing then playing slowly. I never heard of the 2 utilities, MacJanitor and Yasu, but I downloaded them and ran them both. Then rebooted. But the problem remains, video playback is very jerky.

The jerky snapping of the Finder has been considerably reduced, but still present, with the columns wanting to move back and forth laterally. Also, when renaming a clip in the Browser it gets flacky and the text jerks a bit. Other programs are working, but a bit strangely – when I open Word, a blank doc opens but the menu does not show up along the top of the screen, and same for Photoshop – but they are functioning.

I’ve been using FCP for many years and am quite proficient at it, but never ran into this problem. It’s running on a new G5 that has not caused any problems previously. Still hoping for more help, thanks.

Perhaps it is now time for the Harpoon solution (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)

for those not in the know:
1. turn everything off.
2. unplug firewire cables
3. unplug power cords
4. get up from well worn chair
5. walk to refrigerator
6. open refrigerator
7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
8. pop cap
9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
12. Plug everything back together
12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.

does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.

cheerios,

Ah HAH!

It's not likely a virus or other mal-ware but I'm going to guess there is a background application now running about which you know nothing or you have inadvertently given your Mac permission to remain logged onto a remote server. Open Activity Monitor and see what's running besides what you know should be running. Open your network settings and try to interpret wht you see.
Post back.

Success! Studio X, my hat's off to you. I had forgotten those basic first principles in my eagerness to fix the problem: pull the plug and take a breather. I did as told, taking a tea break, and now playback is smooth. Perhaps that google video uploader played tricks in my system and maybe the cleanup utilities helped straighten things out, I don't know, but it was you who came up with the final fix, thanks a million. Now my dream system is humming along once again.
