So the Foxconn factory that makes iPads just had an explosion. I heard a batch of iPad batteries were the cause of the explosion. Does that mean my iPad can explode during normal use? I really don't want my iPad to explode while using it or kill me.

Please tell me that you are kidding.

Of course your ipad will not explode.

Well obviously the iPads at the Foxconn factory exploded. I've also heard stories of peoples iPods exploding IN THEIR POCKET! I'm a bit worried now.

I read the article and the Foxxcon factory is claiming they created the explosion in the manufacturing line by accident.  It didn't say batteries exploded inside iPads, so I really doubt you have anything at all to worry about.  If it's going to give you nightmares, you'll likely find a long line of people who would be more than willing to buy your iPad from you.  They still can't catch up with demand......

And I've heard stories about elves and alien abductions. Doesn't make them true. If you could provide a link to a reputable news source with a documented occurance, I'd be interested.

In theory, if you carry a lithium ion battery loose in your pocket and something conductive, such as a paperclip where to be pressed across the contacts, the battery might start to get hot. It might, in extreme circumstances, even smoke. However, as the battery in both the iPhone and the iPad is enclosed in the device, this is less likely. You might be able to cause a problem if you jammed something in the charging port. With normal use, cell phones don't explode.

Worry about getting hit by a driver who's talking on a cell phone while driving. I suspect it's far more likely to happen.

I would love to know where you get your news from, but the real cause of the explosion is still being investigated.

Who says that batteries exploded at Foxconn?

    Read this BBC report:

The only mention of the iPad in any of the news reports I've seen is that the explosion was in building A5 which "reportedly houses the production line for Apple's iPad 2".  No mention of batteries at all, and no mention of the cause of the explosion at all in fact.

This reminds me of the concerns regarding the population explosion.  A woman exploded in Chicago just last week while eating soup.

Was she with child?  Maybe we should avoid being near pregnant women.....

And what if there is a meteor shower on your house? What will you do then?

Are you ignoring the fact that there was an iPad explosion at a factory like Apple is ignoring the fact that Macs now have malware running on them?

  • paulcb Level 6 (19,110 points)

No, there was an explosion at a Foxconn factory that makes iPads... not an iPad explosion.

Clearly you are quite disturbed at the possibility of an iPad conflagration, I share your concern and am offering to save you from the disaster that looms. Please send your iPad to me and I will guarantee to keep you safe from it.
