I use Skype alot but the audio in the Mac is really low. I bought a really neat Brookstone mini speaker and the audio is great. The problem is the microphone in the mac stops working as soon as i connect the speakers. I checked the sound preferences in the mac and definitely, as soon as I disconnect the speaker the mic receives signals. Connet the speakers and nothing.

When you connect the speakers it is probably selecting "Line in" for audio input.
After you connect the speakers go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input and select the internal microphone.
Thanks for your reply however what happens is that when the speakers are not connected and I go to sound preferences I can pick Internal Microphone or Line In. As soon as I connect the speakers then Internal Microphones is replaced by External MIcrophone. The option for Internal Microphone disappears. I think your answer would be correct if I knew how to have this option when the speakers are connected.

I'm having the exact same issue with my Sennheiser px 200ii headset. Apparently the integrated microphone doesn't work with OS X, but it still changes my "internal microphone" into an "external microphone" when I plug it into the audio output jack. It didn't always do this, but one day while plugging the thing in using Skype it started!
