Restoring individual files from TM of different user account

I recently got a new computer and decided not to use Migration Assistant so I could pick and choose the files I wanted to transfer from my old Time Machine backup. However, with this method, I lose ownership of the transferred files and have to change ownership in the Finder Get Info window. Is there a way around this or do I have to use Migration Assistant?
