How to set default volume in QT Player app and Finder?

My question is simple as this - how do I get QT Player to open at the same volume everytime it launches or plays a movie instead of just opening at maximum volume?

In Finder Preview column I wish to do the same - I think this worked under Panther - you simply set the level once and it remained that way or maybe it went away with the advent of QT7?

This is a totally stupid and annoying oversight on the part of the QT programmers. The sound-level bug has been a source of extreme annoyance for me ever since I first used QT eons ago and the reason I'm writing this now is due to being caught out for the umpteeth time whilst surfing and listening to a cd; I go to a site where there is music on the home page and it BLASTS my ****** ears off!

It's such a basic requirement; a pre-settable volume that can be saved! Is it beyond the intelligence of the programmers? We can put men on the moon but not have a default-adjustable volume level on a major piece of software?

If anyone at QT reads these comments then they will see that there is a HUGE demand for this bug to be fixed. Get on and do it NOW!

like the iTunes volume control for example...I set the volume on the App and my system volume to a reasonable level ... hey presto, normalized volumes!

Actually, the feature that is acheiving the consistent volume is not the volume control but the iTunes > Preferences > Playback > Sound Check "Automatically adjusts song playback volume to the same level"

You could request the feature be added...

Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound > Output Volume (you can also check "Show volume in the menubar" for easy access.)

That will set the maximum volume but mov files can have a specific playback volume set within them so they may play at lower volumes (not sure if QT always honors that or not though.) You can adjust it with QuickTime Pro by choosing "Show movie properties" from the Window menu, then select the "Sound track" and then click the "Audio Settings" button below. Then save the movie.

There is no way to "save" audio volume settings in a QuickTime file using version 7 or a Tiger machine.
It was once a feature of QT Pro but these settings are no longer "save-able" in a QT file.
Older versions (6.5.2 on older OS's) do allow you to adjust and save volume settings.
Odd. Yep. A "bug"? Maybe. A "fix"? Not on Tiger that I can find.
Each file can also start playback volume (most common are Web based) at a higher level.
Like the commercials on TV, I guess.

Volume not save-able? Sure it is.

You must have QuickTime Pro (required to do any saving), but any .mov file will allow you to save the current volume state. Simple as modifying the volume slider and selecting File-Save (or Cmd-S)

Note: this only applies to QuickTime Movies .mov. If you want to do the same thing with an mpg file, I believe you need to save as a self contained QuickTime Movie first.

I have QT PRO v7

As noted..modifying the contents of a file is way overkill when all I need is a simple App Master Volume control...which is what the control should be...like the iTunes volume control for example...I set the volume on the App and my system volume to a reasonable level ... hey presto, normalized volumes!

Maybe I'm the only one that watches dodgy movies with QT and doesn't need deafening...but I doubt it.

I have no problems with the 'save' option on movie files. If I set the volume half way, for example, on an mpeg and save it then the next time I open that movie or sound clip the volume is at a median level.

It's the level on incoming sound through websites or streamed audio clips that is the bugbear of us all. It is particularly annoying when downloads start playing automatically when you click on the link. I'm just gonna keep the volume control on my PowerBook turned well down when surfing just to be on the safe side.

I'm with Steve. And I would hardly call this problem "solved" because what Steve was asking for has not been addressed at all.

What we want is sticky application volume control. No offense intended Quicktimeguy, but telling us that the volume is dependent on some esoteric file setting so therefore Quicktime can't remember what it's volume setting was the last time it opened any file is, well, not the point.

VLC can remember, MPlayer can remember, WMP can remember, Real can remember, even iTunes can remember, but Quicktime Pro has Alzhiemer's when it comes to the volume setting. That's just inexcusable, and probably why so many no longer use it.

/end rant
