May 21, 2011 10:27 AM in response to Noxesby old comm guy,Open System Preferences (you can do that from the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen).
Select the Network preference pane. It should be shoeing Network Status. Evidently, Built-in Ethernet is going to have a red dot next to it in the list. With Built-in Ethernet selected, click the Configure button.
From there, you should probably click the "Assist me..." button and select the assistant to guide you through the setup.
That's probably the easiest way to get it done.

May 21, 2011 10:39 AM in response to Noxesby Noxes,Okay, found it.
Under the selection it has options like Built-in Modem and ethernet cable, etc.
However, when I select ethernet, I have to type in all my information from my ISP.
Is there any other way to connect without?
The assistant is not working from what I can tell when I have it "automatically" type in my settings.
Does this make sense?
Do you need more information?

May 21, 2011 10:56 AM in response to Noxesby BDAqua,Is the Ethernet cable connected to a Router or a Modem?
Generally you will need to type in a username & password one time to connect.

May 21, 2011 10:57 AM in response to BDAquaby Noxes,My internet is set up as:
- My COX modem has ethernet connected to router
- MY ethernet cord (from the router) is connected to a switch (board with multiple ethernet jacks)
- From the switch board, it connects to my MAC.
This works because my PC is currently connected the same way and works no problems.
Any ideas?

May 21, 2011 11:08 AM in response to Noxesby BDAqua,OK, if the Mac is connected to a LAN port on the Router, it too should connect.
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
10.5.x/10.6.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
Click on Ethernet, then the Advanced button>TCP/IP tab, check that it is sset to Using DHCP, click on Renew Lease, what IP & Router IP does it show?
Oh, could your Router be setup to only allow certain Hardware MAC addresses?

May 21, 2011 11:24 AM in response to BDAquaby Noxes,Under System Preferences > Network, I see no type of +, - or a gear.
Does that mean I do not have that version or something?
I am sorry, I am just a complete novice with Macs.
I really appreciate all that you are doing.
Thank you very much.

May 21, 2011 11:42 AM in response to Noxesby BDAqua,Maybe you're not running Leopard but Tiger?
10.4 & earlier directions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON?
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, it'll show the version of OSX.

May 21, 2011 11:49 AM in response to BDAquaby Noxes,1. When I try to see my OS, it opens up Firefox to appleos/get (that is not 100% accurate, but pretty close if I remember correctly)
2. All the boxes are checked.
- When I open network, there is a little red dot next to Internal Modem.
Any help?

May 21, 2011 11:49 AM in response to Noxesby Noxes,Oops, I forgot to mention..
Since I do not have an internet connection, I cannot load the web page to show me my OS.

May 21, 2011 12:37 PM in response to BDAquaby Noxes,Okay, I understand.
1. I unchecked the Internal Modem and dragged Internal Ethernet (checked) to the top.
2. I checked About This Mac and where yours says Leo2 (leopard?), mine just says Hard Drive.
I clicked on More Information, I clicked on software update and do not see anything of help.
However, when I clicked More Info, it brought me to hardware menu which shows all software and hardware on the computer.
I did not see anything that resembled a OS in all the menus.
--- After I dragged Internal Ethernet to the top, should it work now?

May 21, 2011 1:05 PM in response to Noxesby BDAqua,OK, great... btw, welcome to Macdom!
That is Tiger/10.4.0 to 10.4.11, you have the last Tifer update.
In System Preferences>Network>Show:>Built-in Ethernet>TCP/IP tab, what does it report all there for Confiure IPv4:, & IP:, & Router?
