Firewire to Thunderbolt, Firewire to Thunderbolt
Are there any Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt adaptors out there?
Are there any Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt adaptors out there?
None.
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7), 2.4GHz IntelCore i5 320 HD 8GB RAM
Ahhhh, this is so frustrating! Just bought the new iMac Refresh.... no Firewire 400, only one Firewire 800!?!! ****. This Thunderbolt thing is cool, but it needs some adapters. From my research they say it's going to be possible, but there are none in production that I can find.
I have 3 Firewire 800 external harddrives and one Firewire 400 external soundcard, I've daisy chained the harddrives together and am either going to buy this firewire 800/400 hub or a 400 to 800 converter and a Firewire 800 hub.
Sonnet Technologies Yin Yang Firewire Mini Hub FW800 FHB-8284
Or
I can also get a 400 to 800 converters cable (elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter for Mac)
And a Firewire repeater (Kramer VS-8FW 8-Port FireWire Repeater / Hub)
The first option is cheaper ($46.67) and the second more expensive ($6.99+$120=$126.99). Probably just going to go with the cheaper option and hopefully it'll do the trick for the time being.
Hopefully some Firewire 400 to Thunderbolt converters come out soon! We need those ports!!!
Why not just daisy-chain the three FW800 drives off your FW800 port and add the FW400 drive onto the end of the chain with a FW400-800 cable and save $50?
You do realize, don't you, that your drives will never move data at Thunderbolt speed even if a TB adapter becomes available?
Ahhhhh... yes.... that worked... lol. Forgot about daisy chaining. I just needed to dig up my AC adapter for my soundcard and all is working fine. Thank you! You saved me $50.
Yeah, I realize it won't be faster, just want to utilize more ports. Having 3 harddrives and a soundcard all on one Firewire 800 port can't be too healthy.
Sonnet has an TB-capable expresscard adapter.

they just announced a thunderbolt to firewire adapter cable (release date juli) for the new macbook pro.
I hope it will work with all other thunderbolt connectors too (and not be something that only the new macbook supports)
1. FireWire 800/ThunderBolt Adapter.
2. FireWire 800/400 Adapter.

Ok, July is almost over. Where is that FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adaptor. I want to work on my FCP video project that's sitting on the 800 drive and can't connect it to my new MacBook Pro Retina Display.
