Audio to Onkyo TX-DS474 Receiver via optical doesn't work--why?

I have the newly released 27" imac, Apple TV 2 successfully streaming through Airport Xtreme.

Surround sound does work from cable box and Blue Ray player.

I have HDMI from ATV to HDTV and an optical from ATV to the AV Receiver.

The Onkyo is about 10 years old, but I would think that the optical audio would work.

What am I missing, or is there an age related incompatibility issue?

Thank you very much for any response.

AppleTV2 outputs linear PCM for stereo audio, and Dolby Digital 5.1 for films if they have the sound encoded as such - you may want to check if the input is configurable for auto detection of the optical feed or set to one specific kind of expected input.

AppleTV2 should output audio over both HDMI and optical at the same time.

If it's stereo audio that's not working it could be the AppleTV oddity of converting stereo to 16 bit 48 kHz on output - if your Onkyo only expects 44.1 kHz and won't handle 48 kHz that could be it, though I think most, even older devices would support 48 kHz given that that was used for DAT.
