Missing Sound Library in iMovie 11

We have a new iMac, and imported our profiles with the migration assistent. My wife is creating a project in iMovie, however, when we click on the button to add a sound effect there's nothing to select.

I've tried reinstalling / updating iMovie, but no luck. No iMovie sound files show up, no iLife files, and no iTunes songs. Any thoughts on what's wrong?

Hi,

I have the exact same problem on my new Macbook Pro - using original account (but this also occurs in newly created accounts and migrated account).

Sounds show up in iMovie HD. The loops are there in the library but there are no sounds listed in iPhoto or iMovie. Loops do show up in Garageband.

I have repaired permissions and reinstalled iLife with no luck.

Yes, I did try that but the media browser didn't seem like it would take them there. I could add them to an individual timeline for a project but not to the audio part of the media browser. iPhoto shows up fine and I can add photos there easily but no audio option for either iMovie or for iPhoto slideshows.

I only have caf format in the Apple Sound Effects library folder. I tried adding one aif file but no luck and I believe the aif is not what I need anyway but I am not sure.

Thanks.

Yes, I tried that as well. Trashed any pref I could find referencing iMovie, iPhoto and iApps in both user and System library folders.

Same blank audio media pane as the screenshot at the start of this thread. So odd, the files are there but somehow the pointer just doesn't find them or iTunes, which also has music in it that plays just fine within iTunes.

Thanks for the suggestions!

It is possible that the iTunes Library may also be the culprit. iMovie may be trying to reach your current library file and encountering an error.

Have you tried creating a test iTunes library? You can do this by holding option while launching iTunes.

BTW, iMovie '11 originally stored those sound effects in the root Library. They were later moved to the application iMovie.app resources folder so a reinstall will bring them back.

Hi,

I finally got it resolved when I found this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2293801?start=0&tstart=0

I solved it by grabbing the iLifeMediaPlugins for another Mac in my office and copying them to the laptop where this issue was showing.

Rebooted and now my media browser shows the tunes again - both iTunes and the iLife sounds.

Just wanted to pass along a possible solution.

Did this affect any of your current iMovie projects? I'm having the same problem, but I don't want to mess up any of the projects I'm currently working on. That would be hours of work to redo.

Also, is it possible the last iMovie update caused this problem? I ask because I'm having the same problem on two different Macs, and the last time I remember it all working okay was back in April. Hasn't there been an update since that time?
