Why when i send a sms does it say 'message send failure' when i have full signal bars?

I have an iPhone 4 32GB, It has run fine up till now. When i try to send a message the sending bar reaches about 90% and then stays there for a few minutes. Then says message send failure. I have never had a problem before and i have full signal bars at the time of send? any help on this matter please?
