Changed permissions on Mac HD. How do I resolve the issue without erasing the drive? All external drives have corrupt permissions as well.

I changed the permissions on the macintosh HD. After doing so, it caused all attached drives to have corrupt permissions.

How do I resolve this without erasing all of my data?

I chose my main user to have full permissions. I stupidly chose "apply to enclosed". The HD wouldn't work until I successfully fixed its permissions. The other hard drives, however, have a generic icon with a lock. When I check info, I get "custom" which I cannot change.

I saw a similar problem here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1591119?threadID=1591119

Not sure If that's what I should pursue. I'm not at a super high level of tech savvy with terminal.

That thread was from July 2008, and although V.K.'s Terminal command suggestions are still valid, he later posted versions that are easier to use. You can use the two commands he listed in this 2010 thread by copy-pasting them directly into Terminal, without reference to the specific names of your own drives:

Drives Locked!
