The following was done by clicking the Camera icon, choosing "From the Web", pasting in the image's URL and clicking Insert Image:

If the image is not already on the Web, you can click the Camera icon and choose "From your Computer":

...But although it animates in the editing window, it doesn't animate when posted. 😟

In general, it is not a good idea to Hotlink images in forums, especially without permission from the image or site owner. Hotlinking has the potential to drive up visits to a site that is not configured to handle the load. Also, the linked to image may be copyrighted.

Even worse, what if the owner of the site changes the linked to image to some other image, maybe even an embarassing image? Your hotlink will result in this new unwanted image being displayed.

So if one is going to link to a remote image, it is best to use a known source.

Now of course, I can't get it to work. Figures.

Of course if the site http://www.myemoticons.com was to replace the image hammock-1.gif with an obscene image and name the new image hammock-1.gif this and all other posts linking to that image would display the obscene image. So hotlinking is not a good idea if only for this reason.

Apple Support Communities use https (SSL). Posters please be aware that if you insert an image sourced from an external web site that uses http rather than https, a properly-configured browser will throw a security warning when viewing the page. For example when I view this thread, IE throws up the message "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?" In this case the dancing frog is sourced from a non-secure connection to another Apple site, me.com. I applaud Apple for securing ASC but until all other sites allow secure connections, this annoying warning will occur. Disabling this warning is dangerous so please do not advise that.

Digressing a bit here: I don't mind a once in a while gif -- in fact, I can sometimes find them enjoyable, and occasionally might put one in a post, myself -- but when it's a permanent signature, I am beginning to find them really insufferably annoying and distracting.

I wouldn't mind there being some kind of limits placed on the permanent ones -- maybe size. Or, even better, none at all allowed.
