I am attending a conference tomorrow and want to install the app created for it but it requires iOS 4.3. iTunes says my iPod is current with iOS 4.2.1. What's going on??

Depends on which ipod you have.
4.2.1 is the most recent version for ipod 2nd gen.

It's likely because you have a 2G iPod Touch, which can only be upgraded to 4.2.1. See this article to help you identify which generation you own.

I have a gen 3 iPod Touch!
Are you sure? If it's an 8GB model, it's actually a 2G iPod Touch, although some resellers mistakeningly referred to them as 3G models.
If it's not an 8 GB model, have you made sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed?

It's a 32GB. I've got iTunes 10.2.2.12.

I THINK it's A1288 but I wouldn't swear to it.
Hi. If it is A1288, that makes it a 2nd generation. The 3rd generation is A1318.

If the model number is indeed A1288, then it's a 2nd-generation unit. The 3rd-gen is A1318.

That's disappointing. I have always thought it was a gen 3! Purchased new from Apple in 2009. My mistake, I suppose. It was purchased for me by my employer.
OS 4.3 is available but iTunes says I am current with 4.2.1??
