I am visiting USA in a couple of weeks and I wonder if iPads are available on the shelves in Apple retail stores. Can anyone confirm please?

No, highly unlikely chance you will be able to buy from the retail store as supply is limited and employees don't know when and how many in each shipment they will receive. Best bet is to order online.

Several stores have a limited supply. I just bought an iPad2 at Best Buy and they had a few. Your best bet is to call the local stores when you arrive, i.e. Target, Best Buy, Apple, etc.
Ordering online would be my best option but most online US retailers don't accept international credit cards 😟 and there is still a risk that my trip will be cancelled (e.g. due to the vulcano in Iceland 🙂 ).
Anyway, thank you both for the feedback, at least I know what to expect.
