Q: Can software cause paper jam in LW 360?

I have a LW Select 360 connected to MacPro by Parallel to USB cable OS10.6.7. This works reasonably well but occasionally seems to not connect properly. The main issue though is with the paper feed. I originally assumed a feed roller issue but no matter how much I cleaned the rollers the second or third copy would appear to stop part way through the printer in a similar (but not always the same) position. The job was quite a simple form created as a multipage document in Illustrator and placed InDesignCS3 (Numbering added in ID). Even trying to print a few copies at once caused the 'jam' in case it was to do with print spooling. After trying everything I could I exported the file as a pdf and printed perfectly through Acrobat Pro.

Now, I would have said printing to an old printer may cause problems but wouldn't have expected this sort of issue. It was as though the software was trying to 'force feed' the printer and it choked. Anyone else had a similar issue?

Thanks for the info - that is really helpful.

Di your printer stop part way through a print or part way through a job? My issue is that the first copy prints but the paper doesn't feed correctly on second copy (sometimes third). Same job saved a a pdf prints OK.

I had an issue printing a large photo on banner paper through my Xerox where the image would only print about 2/3 of the way through - lowering the quality and hence the Postscript processing needed fixed this.

On the LW I think the extra memory is worth installing but I am not totally sure it is the cause of the problem.

Just had a quick search and it looks like the RAM from the Performa 6200 should fit the LW360 (part numbers look to be the same) - I did try this once some time ago but it didn't appear to work - can you offer any tips? Does it automatically show in in System Profiler after it is installed as I don't think it did when I tried. Or does if have to have settings manually changed somewhere?

    Any info most welcome, thanks.

In Preferences/Printers&Fax open your LSW360 and look for "Drivers". Here you can choose memory settings. It should look like this:

    LSW360config.png

If the RAM module is'nt working properly I'll remember it is greyed out.

    Good luck

Tried installing the RAM from my old Performa but it wouldn't work - printer started doing odd things so switched back to standard RAM. New cable seems to behave as the original so probably not that. Just printed a 1000 sheet print run with no jams printing similar file from ID - the only difference being the fact that the job that was a problem was numbered and printed in reverse order which perhaps points to a print spooling or memory issue.

Illustrator CS3 has an issue printing multiple copies that Adobe never fixed (same issue in ID was fixed). This meant that on a print run of 100 copies the file was sent to the printer 100 times instead of just once along with code to say x100. Now, on a more complex file this resulted in very slow printing as lots of processing was done for each print. Sometimes, depending on file size, there was just a small pause between prints but this often caused a similar jam. Placing the Illustrator file into ID resulted in smoother printing. So I wonder if the type of file I was trying to print (numbered and collated) was causing a similar 'blip' in the process. Why this should cause a jam is a mystery but increasing printer memory can't hurt (if I can find some). Not sure if there is any way to change print spooling though.

Thanks everyone for input on this tricky problem.
