MacBook Pro: Intermittent Black Screen

Summary: I purchased my first MBP around 8 months ago. It's been fantastic to say the least! However, recently (last 3 days), I am experiencing an intermittent black screen issue. Unknown what is the cause, however as this MBP is used as the primary computer for work and play, it is essential this issue is diagnosed and fixed ASAP. Any input from Apple Gurus is much appreciated 🙂

Issue: During normal usage (not after sleep), the screen will suddenly appear black. A hard shutdown / restart is needed. Computer will bootup and continue lost session (if browser's were in use).

- Fans still running.

- Curser did not appear within the black screen.

- External monitor (by DVI connection) and mbp screen were both enabled.

- Issue is occurring with no external monitor attached as well. However, it is more prevalent when monitor is attached (note: 95% of time mbp is attached to external monitor).

Additional: I am aware of of the Nvidia card issues back in 2008. However, this more recent build is outside of that scope, yet the problem seems very similar.

- Apple Hardware Test was preformed yesterday. No issues found.

Great advice from WhoaTony, from this thread.

Hey KP,

Good to hear man!

Visited the Apple Store for the 4th time today, and the Genius this time round went through a length process with me so that we could get down to the bottom of the issue. He was much nicer than the people I've been dealing with so far.

He couldn't figure out the problem and had to get a second opinion, but again, neither of them could spot the issue. I managed to check it in for a logic board replacement after specifying the following (advice for others):

1) I reinstalled the OS after a clean wipe using disk utility, and DID NOT restore from time machine but instead only copied a few files over.

2) Apple has already performed the extended ASD which reported no issues, hence doing it again would be pointless

3) The issue WOULD occur on a clean reinstall, with absolutely no 3rd party software installed

4) My mates with the same models DO NOT have the issue (stupid that I needed to mention that I know)

5) I saved every single kernel panic log into a seperate folder so that they wouldn't disappear after a certain amount of time (It's impressive how big that folder became)

6) I DID NOT drop or bump the machine in any way

And only then, did I get it checked in. But it's done, and I'm happy 😀

First of all, thanks for the detailed info. I'm not sure if I can solve this, but I'll get the ball rolling.

1. Does this behavior happen when you remove your headphone jack? Longer cables can cause excessively long black screens; removing the jack can solve the problem immediately.

2. As you probably know, there's a issue with black screens, and on several MacBooks or different vintages. The only 100% reliable solution is to depress the power button for five seconds, which will reboot your MB. A hard shutdown.

3. If you're near an Apple Store, you might want to discuss it with one of their experts. However, realize that you'll need to duplicate the error in their presence in order to troubleshoot a solution. Be sure to bring the data above and whatever other documentation you have.

Let's see if other experts can add their input.

Poikkeus,

Thank you for your quick reply. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

A little background on myself..

- First computer.. Commodore 64 ~ yes, all the other kids were jealous 🙂

- Web developer/designer

- Long time windoz user

- First MBP (since last apple computer: 84' Macintosh)

1. I have tried to replicate the issue by removing the headphone jack. Issue did not occur.

- tried removing jack with ITunes open, playing, shutoff... issue did not occur.

- i do not recall the jack (plugged in or not) being associated with this issue.

2. Yes, hard shutdown is the only current method to get the MBP back to stable state.

- while in black screen, I have tried to enter login credentials (as suggested in another forum), yet no change in status occurred.

3. I've never had to take any apple product to the Genius bar.... yet if i have too, I will.

- duplicating the issue will be very difficult as it is intermittent.

- unknown what exactly is causing the error (logic board? nvidia conflict? recent 10.6.7 conflict?)

Yes, hopefully this thread will attract a good amount of attention and further DETAILED accounts of likely causes. Together we can build a case for a reasonable solution 😉

Some additional information to add to your file:

1. Glad to know the "jack" issue isn't valid for you. (I have headphones with 30ft cables, and have replicated black screens with two different MacBooks.)

2. Does the system problems occur while using Parallels, or after using Windows? The Black Screen of Death has been repeatedly documented with Parallels. The updates re: this issue may be available. I believe that Parallels may be the culprit, here.

May 24, 2011 1:28 PM in response to Poikkeus

I attribute my obsessive behavior on my dad... who taught me a little preventive maintenance will save you more $$ and time in the long run! Thanks Dad you're the BEST 😉

With this situation, I do not believe the cause is directly related to Parallels software.

We need some further input from other users having the same Black Screen / Blank Screen issue. Including specific logs would greatly assist.

May 26, 2011 3:38 AM in response to mpspringer

Having pretty much the same problem. Just started today. Kernel panics using various apps. The first time it was just a black screen (had to hold down the power button). The next few times, the screen froze.

MB Pro (2.6 i7) running 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). Had Fusion installed (I thought it was that) but I uninstalled it (made sure the kexts were gone) and it still panics. Removed every third party app that had a kernel extension to no avail.

My panic log:

It's been running perfectly for months. Not a single crash previously.

May 30, 2011 5:04 AM in response to genericpenguin

Hey!

I have had the exact same issue for the past couple of months...

I still haven't got a solution, however here is a detailed actions I have done, since I think there is something in them that we might solve together:):

First symptoms:

MacBookPro6,2 mid 2010, Built to order with anti glare screen, and a later manual 8gb crucial ram and 500gb momentus xt hdd.

The problem of sudden black screens started around the end of March.

At first once a week, but soon once a day.

Then, I have tried resetting the smc, pram apple full hardware test, repairing the disk using the original Mac OSx DVD and repaired the permission, but nothing seemed to help.

At the middle of April I set up an apointment at the apple store, with a genius. After describing the error, they took the computer into testin, and after two days told me that the problem was not shown in their testing.

At the same day I took the computer home, and surprisingly and very upsetting I have found a kernel panic log with a date and time proofing the computer was at apple store while crashing.

I called to custom service and after clearing them this is not very proffessional of them they custom service asked if I can drive to a the region center lab, and she will monitor my case so I can be under the supervision of a senior technician. I did just that.

After 3 days I have received a call from the technician, and he told me that the hdd might cause the problems, so he asked If I still have the original hdd that shipped with the computer. I did, and I drove there and gave him the hdd.

After about a week, he called again and told me that after the hdd switch, the computer ran perfectly.

Okay. I went and took my comp. I will mention now, the first clue - the original hdd wasn't in use for around 3 months before all started. And as I started up the computer, I have seen that the original hdd is holding the old ghost. Which means the lab did not clone the new hdd but rather ran the Tests on the older system.

Now, since I thought the newer momentus xt is the cause of the problems, I've got a brand new crucial m4 256gb ssd, and installed the Mac OSx from scratch. No time machine. I then started to update and install The Software, and... After 3 days, the black screen of death have returned!!!

I was really annoyed, and decided to try a different ram. I opened up again my computer, and installed a 2 gb original ram sticks, that I had. (they are from my bf MacBook pro 13. He got my original 4gb).

The black screen of death continued to occur...

Anyhow, from then, until today, for 2 weeks, I tried restoring, installing, backing up, etc. Etc. Etc... And I think I found for the first time SOME correlation between the BSOD:

starting MS Word 2011 will cause the most of the time. As well as MS PowerPoint and MS Excel. if the computer rests, the chances for a crash are higher. Which means, starting the MS Word 2011 right after a reboot will usually pass by with no problems, but rebooting, and then waiting a few min and starting Word will cause almost every time the BSOD.

Random crashes starting happen on a fresh upto date os x AFTER istat menus 3 has been installed. It might be also

connected to kasperaky av for Mac, and also to growl 1.2.2.

So, if I need to sum up, I think we might face some kind of background process inside the Mac os, that might cause collisions, or access violation for some softwares... Might be softwares that uses some deeper kernel Api's...

The last fact is...that I indeed think the problem is mainly or only happens once 10.6.7 has been installed... Which also explain apple respond...

What do you guys think?... I am starting to loose my mind here.. Ahhh!

Jun 1, 2011 9:47 AM in response to Yonsteron

Yonsteron,

Excellent write up! I agree and understand how frustrating this problem is!!

I agree with you once 10.6.7 was installed, this issue seemed to manifest. Unfortunately, the issue now seems to happen more frequently. Since my last post, I have experienced two black screens. One of which JUST happened 😟 I've now reached a point where this issue is greatly affecting my work and is a huge distraction. I'm going to setup an appointment with Genius's..

- I do have MS Office products installed, however rarely use them. For me, Black Screen does not appear to be related to MS software usage.

- Similarly, growl 1.2.2 or Kasperaky (I don't have this installed) does not appear to be related.

Probably not going to help everyone but I managed to stop mine crashing by unticking the "Automatic graphics switching" checkbox in the Energy Saver preferences pane. Mine was crashing every hour or so (unless I played a game like Minecraft in which case it crashed within 60 seconds) and once I disabled that feature I haven't had a crash since. Hope it helps someone.

Jun 2, 2011 3:16 AM in response to mpspringer

Hmm.. if you are working with an external display connected, the "Automatic graphics switching" will not do anything, since the graphics used in this case are the nvidia only... and since most of my time I work with an external display connected, it won't work for me...

(The crashing occurs both with or without external display connected. While it is connected, both screens are "Black").

But - I have found this post:

http://wilby.com/cameron_blog/2010/05/31/macbook-pro-62-core-i7-nvidia-330m-gt-c rash-issues-fix/

Which seems to be the exactly same problem, running windows.

And, accourding to the post, there is a fix, and is connected to the nvidia drivers!

If this is the case, it might indeed be a driver issue with 10.6.7!

I have started installing windows 7 64 bit yesterday, and will finish today once I get back from work.

Will update once I work around in windows alittle bit.

Jun 2, 2011 7:11 AM in response to mpspringer

I just started experiencing this problem yesterday. Last Monday, I applied all the latest software updates from Apple (10.6.7) and Microsoft Office, and the problem has been happening while using MS Word.

I took a full backup before the software updates, so this weekend I'm going to reboot from it, run for a day or two, and see if the problem is still manifesting itself. If not, then maybe the problem has something with the recent software updates. If so, then maybe it's hardware related.

However, from reading the thread above, it looks like the basic problem is still to be figured out. Soooo....

QUICK FIX WORKAROUND: while we're getting to the bottom of the problem, I've been running my second monitor in mirroring mode. So far, the monitor hasn't quit even when the laptop screen is black (including just now as I was completing this post!)

Although it is inconvenient not having both monitors operating independently, it's not nearly as inconvenient as having to do a hard restart every 1/2 hour to resume working!!
