Q: MacBook Pro: Intermittent Black Screen
Summary: I purchased my first MBP around 8 months ago. It's been fantastic to say the least! However, recently (last 3 days), I am experiencing an intermittent black screen issue. Unknown what is the cause, however as this MBP is used as the primary computer for work and play, it is essential this issue is diagnosed and fixed ASAP. Any input from Apple Gurus is much appreciated
Issue: During normal usage (not after sleep), the screen will suddenly appear black. A hard shutdown / restart is needed. Computer will bootup and continue lost session (if browser's were in use).
- Fans still running.
- Curser did not appear within the black screen.
- External monitor (by DVI connection) and mbp screen were both enabled.
- Issue is occurring with no external monitor attached as well. However, it is more prevalent when monitor is attached (note: 95% of time mbp is attached to external monitor).
Additional: I am aware of of the Nvidia card issues back in 2008. However, this more recent build is outside of that scope, yet the problem seems very similar.
- Apple Hardware Test was preformed yesterday. No issues found.

Visited the Apple Store for the 4th time today, and the Genius this time round went through a length process with me so that we could get down to the bottom of the issue. He was much nicer than the people I've been dealing with so far.
He couldn't figure out the problem and had to get a second opinion, but again, neither of them could spot the issue. I managed to check it in for a logic board replacement after specifying the following (advice for others):
1) I reinstalled the OS after a clean wipe using disk utility, and DID NOT restore from time machine but instead only copied a few files over.
2) Apple has already performed the extended ASD which reported no issues, hence doing it again would be pointless
3) The issue WOULD occur on a clean reinstall, with absolutely no 3rd party software installed
4) My mates with the same models DO NOT have the issue (stupid that I needed to mention that I know)
5) I saved every single kernel panic log into a seperate folder so that they wouldn't disappear after a certain amount of time (It's impressive how big that folder became)
6) I DID NOT drop or bump the machine in any way
And only then, did I get it checked in. But it's done, and I'm happy
