This is interesting news... surely we're expecting a major update, not a late/overdue incremental?!
And the first thing we read is "Logic can now open songs created by GarageBand for iPad". How many people on this forum will be making use of that feature?
LP9 is two years old now and could do with some renovation, but I know that Apple will only ever do things their way in their own time.
Sigh.
Perhaps I'm the only one who expects LPX to pop up at WWDC...

Which would be annoying if it were the only update, but considering there are a good 20 other bug fixes, it doesn't bug me.
I've heard rumblings that the next major Logic update won't be any time soon. Assuming that's the case, I'm very glad to see continued improvements to this version.
Now how about putting back some of those features missing from 64 bit mode, particularly the quicktime stuff? I know that's probably more of a QT update than logic, but I'd still like to see it.
Well, *I* heard rumblings that LPX will be released along with FCP. 🙂
How would you describe the quality of *your* rumblings? (Mine = hearsay.)
I happen to be between projects for the next month, which gives me the opportunity to upgrade from 8 to 9 or X within the next few weeks. After that, I'm gonna stay with that chosen version for about 2 years.
I heard it from someone who claims to know people working on the Logic team. That info could still be bogus though. I wouldn't think there would be this many bug fixes if a major update was coming soon although if they have streamlined their development process (and LX isn't a major rewrite) it may not be hard to put bugfixes into both the current version and the upcoming one.
I'm kind of surprised that FCX is getting an update possibly before 10.7 ships, but I guess it's more overdue than logic is (no 64 bit). Hopefully there will be a significant Soundtrack Pro update, and if there is I hope Logic users can get it right away and not have to wait months for a Logic release (or worse, have to pay for it, I'm not risking my cash just to find out how much they've polished that turd).
Thank you for your reply (I would quote your text if I knew how to do it 🙂).
Anyway, your hearsay sounds a bit more reliable than mine. Plus, as you say, the timing of 9.1.4 is remarkable if X is on its way.

As usual with this type of release, there are fixes to bugs Apple has never owned up to so while not a major upgrade, it looks like work is being done. Logic is definitely not a priority item.

Just an observational trend; companies release one final bugs update to a previous version before releasing a new version.
RE the state of logic in apple - it NEEDS an update badly. It's the most un-apple software interface wise and still has a lot of emagic feel in it. It needs a real good re-write. It's a pro app and deserves it. I hope apple doesn't forget it as the last few years, it seems as though apple has forgotten one of the biggest production tools in the world....
It's always been a "Pro App", in fact the opening splash screen used to say "For Professional Studio Use".
Now it says "Can Import The Latest Garageband Files"... just kidding.
I never minded the emagic interface, it was fast and efficient, you just had to know what you're doing. I could care less about making it easy for Garageband users upgrading. I do like the swipe comping, but that's still the emagic people.
I don't think Logic can stand a full re-write, it would end up being a totally different program, maybe that's in Logic's future, hard to say. I think they' will keep re-writing and modernizing the different modules that make up Logic and keep it going as long as they can.
In some ways... Logic is less pro than it used to be, especially in terms of support and timely updates.

Man I hope they don't update the interface too much again...don't forget of course that it was updated relatively recently when Logic 8 came out.
Also the idea of an entire re-write from the ground up doesn't sound too fun as Pancenter pointed out.
"I do like the swipe comping, but that's still the emagic people."
Based on what information do you say this?
(Out of interest is swipe comping a feature that is exclusive to the Logic DAW...excuse my ignorance, how do other programs handle comping?)
Cheers

The interface was indeed updated on L8, but not that much. You could open the PC version of Logic 5.5 and instantly recognize it as being the same program. There are some convienences now but for my money, much of this could be done in the older versions using screensets.
Logic's quick swipe comping was a bit ahead of the curve, although other DAWs have similar features now.
As for who is coding Logic. You just don't hand over the Logic code to a different set of programmers no matter how talented. Logic is a frightfully complicated piece of work with so many interactions I can't imagine anyone but the core group being involved to a large degree. Of course, I don't really know...

It would make a lot of sense that Apple gives us LPX before 10.7, or at least not make 10.7 the min. requirement for it. If LPX needs 10.7, we would need to wait for all our plugins and drivers to be compatible with the new OS before upgrading, which could take some time. It would delay the purchase for everybody who's not working exclusively with LP's plugins and instruments, that's pretty much everybody!!
Although i use LP less than i used to(not using anything else, just having less time for my music), I've enjoyed 2 years of not a single crash with LP9/MainStage2. So, I'm not so much in a hurry to upgrade. It would need a crazy hot feature set to make jump quickly!!
