About the Logic Pro 9.1.4 update

Compatibility

Logic can now open songs created by GarageBand for iPad.

Performance and Stability

  • Logic now provides more specific messaging when playback is stopped because of hard drive performance issues.
  • Resolves an issue in which Logic sometimes performed very slowly after a project that was saved without assets was consolidated.
  • Logic no longer quits unexpectedly when copying, pasting, or swapping voices between slots in Ultrabeat.

64-bit Mode

Resolves an issue in 64-bit mode in which a generic interface for some 32-bit plug-ins was displayed.

Automation

  • Resolves an issue in which moving a region to a different Arrange track assigned to the same channel strip could cause automation to be deleted.
  • Drag-copy of automation curves now works as expected on grouped tracks.
  • Moving an automation node that lies between two other nodes of the same value to the left or right no longer causes it to decrease by -0.1 db in value.
  • Resolves an issue introduced in Logic 9.1 in which performing Undo after using the "Move Visible Track Automation to Region" command would delete the automation.

Audio Editing

  • Resolves an issue in which performing Undo after creating an alias for a region would shorten the region in No Overlap mode.
  • Audio Regions that contain slashes in the name can now be successfully merged using the Glue Tool or Merge command.
  • Quantization of audio regions that have stretched or compressed and contain tempo information now works reliably.
  • Quantize and Q-Strength now work properly on regions created by exporting a Comp from a Take Folder.
  • Resolves an issue where lengthening an audio region could sometimes cause the audio to unexpectedly stretch.
  • Performing Undo after flattening Takes on a group of flexed tracks now works as expected.
  • Takes no longer sometimes display as soloed when their parent Take folder is disclosed but not selected.
  • Resolves an issue in which moving a take region with Quick Swipe Comping disabled sometimes did not move the corresponding take region(s) in tracks within the same Edit Group.
  • Fixes an issue in which dividing a take region that had been created by merging several take regions together could cause the area to the right of the edit to disappear.
  • Resolves an issue in which importing a Take folder into a project with a matching track could cause existing takes to be removed from Take folders in the original track.

Control Surface Support

Resolves an issue introduced in Logic 9.1.2 in which pickup mode for generic control surfaces did not work as expected.

General

  • Resolves an issue in which the key commands Next Screenset and Previous Screenset were reversed.
  • If the Startup Action preference is set to “Ask,” it is again possible to open a project by dragging it onto the Logic icon while the Startup window is open.
  • The default region quantize setting is now maintained after importing channel strips from another project.

This is interesting news... surely we're expecting a major update, not a late/overdue incremental?!

And the first thing we read is "Logic can now open songs created by GarageBand for iPad". How many people on this forum will be making use of that feature?

LP9 is two years old now and could do with some renovation, but I know that Apple will only ever do things their way in their own time.

Sigh.

Which would be annoying if it were the only update, but considering there are a good 20 other bug fixes, it doesn't bug me.

I've heard rumblings that the next major Logic update won't be any time soon. Assuming that's the case, I'm very glad to see continued improvements to this version.

Now how about putting back some of those features missing from 64 bit mode, particularly the quicktime stuff? I know that's probably more of a QT update than logic, but I'd still like to see it.

Well, *I* heard rumblings that LPX will be released along with FCP. 🙂

How would you describe the quality of *your* rumblings? (Mine = hearsay.)

I happen to be between projects for the next month, which gives me the opportunity to upgrade from 8 to 9 or X within the next few weeks. After that, I'm gonna stay with that chosen version for about 2 years.

I heard it from someone who claims to know people working on the Logic team. That info could still be bogus though. I wouldn't think there would be this many bug fixes if a major update was coming soon although if they have streamlined their development process (and LX isn't a major rewrite) it may not be hard to put bugfixes into both the current version and the upcoming one.

I'm kind of surprised that FCX is getting an update possibly before 10.7 ships, but I guess it's more overdue than logic is (no 64 bit). Hopefully there will be a significant Soundtrack Pro update, and if there is I hope Logic users can get it right away and not have to wait months for a Logic release (or worse, have to pay for it, I'm not risking my cash just to find out how much they've polished that turd).

As usual with this type of release, there are fixes to bugs Apple has never owned up to so while not a major upgrade, it looks like work is being done. Logic is definitely not a priority item.

Just an observational trend; companies release one final bugs update to a previous version before releasing a new version.

RE the state of logic in apple - it NEEDS an update badly. It's the most un-apple software interface wise and still has a lot of emagic feel in it. It needs a real good re-write. It's a pro app and deserves it. I hope apple doesn't forget it as the last few years, it seems as though apple has forgotten one of the biggest production tools in the world....

May 25, 2011 11:31 AM in response to MusioMan

It's always been a "Pro App", in fact the opening splash screen used to say "For Professional Studio Use".

Now it says "Can Import The Latest Garageband Files"... just kidding.

I never minded the emagic interface, it was fast and efficient, you just had to know what you're doing. I could care less about making it easy for Garageband users upgrading. I do like the swipe comping, but that's still the emagic people.

I don't think Logic can stand a full re-write, it would end up being a totally different program, maybe that's in Logic's future, hard to say. I think they' will keep re-writing and modernizing the different modules that make up Logic and keep it going as long as they can.

In some ways... Logic is less pro than it used to be, especially in terms of support and timely updates.

Man I hope they don't update the interface too much again...don't forget of course that it was updated relatively recently when Logic 8 came out.

Also the idea of an entire re-write from the ground up doesn't sound too fun as Pancenter pointed out.

"I do like the swipe comping, but that's still the emagic people."

Based on what information do you say this?

(Out of interest is swipe comping a feature that is exclusive to the Logic DAW...excuse my ignorance, how do other programs handle comping?)

Cheers

The interface was indeed updated on L8, but not that much. You could open the PC version of Logic 5.5 and instantly recognize it as being the same program. There are some convienences now but for my money, much of this could be done in the older versions using screensets.

Logic's quick swipe comping was a bit ahead of the curve, although other DAWs have similar features now.

As for who is coding Logic. You just don't hand over the Logic code to a different set of programmers no matter how talented. Logic is a frightfully complicated piece of work with so many interactions I can't imagine anyone but the core group being involved to a large degree. Of course, I don't really know...

It would make a lot of sense that Apple gives us LPX before 10.7, or at least not make 10.7 the min. requirement for it. If LPX needs 10.7, we would need to wait for all our plugins and drivers to be compatible with the new OS before upgrading, which could take some time. It would delay the purchase for everybody who's not working exclusively with LP's plugins and instruments, that's pretty much everybody!!

Although i use LP less than i used to(not using anything else, just having less time for my music), I've enjoyed 2 years of not a single crash with LP9/MainStage2. So, I'm not so much in a hurry to upgrade. It would need a crazy hot feature set to make jump quickly!!
