uninstall Gutenprint Printer Drivers

While I can find the apple printer drivers for different brands in the library, and could delete them there to uninstall, I cannot find the location of the Gutenprint Printer Drivers. I assume they might be in lower level hidden directories.

I would like to uninstall them (so the different printers they support no longer show as an option when adding new printers), I tried with a special gutenprint uninstaller from the gutenprint project, without success. The apple installer has no uninstall option...

I don't have a printer available for my laptop atm, is there a way to add a printer, see the list of drivers without having a printer plugged in?

The drivers I canot get un-installed are these apple provided ones http://support.apple.com/downloads/Gutenprint_Printer_Drivers_for_Mac_OS_X_v10_6

So it's well possible that the receipt is deleted after install. Or as said earlier if installed on the fly, only 2 drivers I tried have been installed, and its rather a question of getting the list of available gutenprint drivers out of the add printer software dropdown...

The Gutenprint PPDs are located in HD > Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources. If you checked this location you may not see the PPDs any longer, as I would expect that the Gutenprint uninstaller did work. But this does not remove the printers from the Print Using menu. To do this you will need to reset the printing system. This will delete your existing print queues but not the printer drivers. Note that it won't remove some of the Apple system printers from the list. They are kept in System Library and cannot easily be removed.

How to Reset the Printing System

  1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
  2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
  3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
  4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
  5. Restart your Mac

For Snow Leopard, the Gutenprint drivers do not install PPD files to /Library/Printers/PPDs. They are created "on the fly" when you add a printer.

I would need to see the install.log for when you ran the Gutenprint uninstaller to determine why the uninstaller did not work. You can find that log by using the Console applications (/Applications/Utiltities). Look for the content under /var/log/install.log. Please post the appropriate log section for when you ran the uninstaller.

I did find the problem with the Gutenprint uninstaller and have fixed it. You can download it from my website. I'm not quite sure when or what changed that broke the installer. After I run a lot more tests, I will update the Gutenprint site with the revised uninstaller. NOTE: For anyone viewing this thread at a later time, this uninstaller will only be at the above link for a day or so. It will soon be placed on the Gutenprint site.

As to your adding a printer without having it plugged in, it depends on how you plan to connect to the printer. If you are going to connect it to your computer via USB or to an Apple Base Station, then you cannot add the printer before you plug it in.

You can see the list of supported printers that are included in the latest version of the Gutenprint release at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php.
