Okay, I delteted the app from my iPhone, but iTunes wants to reinstall it. No obvious way to delete the app from iTunes. Of course, when I find out how, it will be facepalm time.

I have the same question. I went to the iTunes Library. I found the app(s) that I wanted to delete however, using my iMac track-pad, I cannot delete the app. I used two fingers after scrolling over the app, which normally are used to delete, but nothing happens. I do not see any option to complete the delete process. Do you have any other suggestions?

No joy. None of those work. I've used the delete key with and without the control button, command key with and with the delete button, tried lots of combinations but they are all still there.
Lets recap -
Plug up your iPhone 6 then,
Connect to iTunes.
Go to apps on computer under phone.
See apps and select apps that were downloaded but unwanted.
Tried to use track-pad two fingers to highlight (didn't work, no options displayed)
Highlighted app, then held control button with one click on track-pad (didn't work, no options displayed)
Highlighted app, then tried to use delete button (didn't work)
Don't connect the iPhone. Just open iTunes and select Apps as screenshot below:
Go to the apps folder in iTunes on your PC and delete it from there. This will prevent the app from reinstalling.
If you really want to get rid of it: iTunes>Library>Apps...right-click the app you want to delete, select delete, when prompted, move all files to trash, empty your trash. Then, make sure you first delete the app on your phone, then sync your phone. The app and all traces of its data will be gone.

Path to get to iPhone Apps in 10.6.7 is:
Users::your_name::Music::iTunes::Mobile Applications
It would have been easier to just search for the App name, duh. Hindsight is so 20/20.
When you want to delete and app from Itunes to get it out of your library you need to click on the 'apps' in your itunes library, not the 'app' on your device. So look on the left column of itunes, Under the heading LIBRARY you'll see APPS, in that window if you right click on a MAC or PC you can delete the app from your library forever.
Ahhh, Apple very cleverly hid this function. Delete App returns no help in Help, either. Thanks!

Thank you, per your suggestion, I tapped on my track-pad with two fingers while holding the control key however, nothing happened and I still have tons of apps sitting in the library.
Hold the control key then one click on the trackpad.
Just use the delete key.
