I can no longer edit a pdf file after deleting pdfviewer

I used to be able to open a pdf and edit it. I deleted pdfviewer because I wasn't able to download certain things like a bank statement or a restaurant menu. Now I can't edit a pdf. Are the two things related?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
