Pretty much. Sorry brother. If you get an iPod touch, Apple does offer a recovery service, so when it connects to the web, it pings its rough location, and if you apply the setting, it can lock and or wipe the device.

I'm sorry the only thing he has to do is restore it with another iTunes Library.
With the iPod Touch there is 'Find my iPod' which tracks your iPod.

Thanks all for the info. I assumed the worst also. The shuffle was several years old at least. We do have 2 of the itouch models also that the kids keep updated and password protected.
