FaceTime email not verifiable

Hi

I can't get FaceTime on my iPad or iMac to work. This seems to be an apple ID issue. Can anyone help out?

My apple ID is my old mac.com email address. I am not allowed to change this, and it is of course my iTunes and app store ID. However, I let that mac.com account lapse and created a new me.com account. I then set the primary email address on my iTunes account to my new me.com address, of course.

So, my apple ID is 'oldemail@mac.co'm and has a primary email address which is 'newemail@me.com' (not real addresses, of course). Meanwhile, newemail@me.com is also an apple ID, isn't it, but one I use for MobileMe facilities.

Now, when I use FaceTime, I have to use the apple ID associated with my iTunes account (oldemail@mac.com). When I try to log in, it recognises my apple ID (oldemail) but when I get to the page where it asks for my email address to associate with FaceTime, it says it can't verify it (newemail). Result: I can't use FaceTime.

I've gone to appleid.apple.com, and logged into my apple ID account. Next to my primary email address it says 'unverified' (which might explain why the FaceTime app hangs at that stage) and next to that a link that says 'verify now'. Looks good. But, when I click on that link, nothing happens - the page just refreshes. I receive no verification email. I tried to click that link on my ipad, my macbook, my imac, and even in font if a genius bar worker in an apple flagship store - same result, the page just refreshes. So I can never use FaceTime.

I emailed apple support, and unhelpfully they tell me my account is verified. I know that, but why can't I verify my primary email address? Could it be because my primary email address is also a second apple ID (for MobileMe)? If so, do I have to change the primary email address on my apple email account to a non-apple email address? In other words, is it the case that there is no way I can use my only active apple email address as my FaceTime address?

Hope you follow? Any solutions out there that would let me use my MobileMe email address as my FaceTime address on iPad and iMac?

Yes. You have to get the emails setup differently.

My FaceTime account is tied to my Apple iTunes account email, not my MobileMe email address. So in the account area, that is the email address I have entered there. Then I have a seperate work email (you could setup a yahoo, google email, etc) that I can be reached at for video calls in that section and it should verify them. They cannot be the same email address.

Thanks. Yeah, my iTunes ID is what I use for FaceTime, but that ID is a lapsed mac.com address, which no longer exists, but which I can't change as an iTunes ID. So it is not the same as the MobileMe address, but I'd like to use that MobileMe address as my FaceTime address.

So, what you're saying is that apple have set this up in such a way that means I can't use my MobileMe email address for people to contact me on FaceTime, but instead have to set up a gmail or yahoo email, and send it to all my contacts who might want to FaceTime me? Bad advert for Apple. 'Hi guys, you know my MobileMe email address, I kind of can't use it for FaceTime, so set aside this non-apple address especially for face timing me'.

Ah well.

Thanks for your quick replies.

Having just setup FaceTime, I assumed the ID Account to be that of my iTunes account, which is also used for the App Store. So it was with great frustration to find that FaceTime kept saying this ID was in use. Just by pure chance I tried the setup for logging in to my MobileMe account and found it configured the address book in seconds. So easy and yet so confusing.

So just use your MobileMe Email and then the Password.

Its a shame the online MobileMe support chat did not pick up on this and instead referred me to seek help from Apple support.

I have a Mac.com applied. I have read all of these posts and am still confused. I changed my applied email address (maybe not necessary, but who knows). Then I tried to setup FaceTime on my new iPad. Put my applied in, put my me.com address in then hit next ..... Verifying forever .... Then no joy .... Get a box to check my email ...sure nut, no email. I don't understand. Can someone share the secret decoder ring!!!

I'm having the exact same problem and apple support is giving me TOTAL BS as answers to my problem. If I have a working apple ID (I bought facetime for my imac with the same ID) I should also be able to log IN to facetime with that SAME email address ID. It's effing STUPID. Apple really Effed this up. They need to fix that! I finally figured out that I can log on using my me.com email address. But I DON'T want to use that! I don't use that email account for anything and none of my friends have it. I use my gmail address to make ALL of my apple purchases and I should be able to use it to log on to FaceTime if I want to.

I am having the exact same problem.

I tried setting up Facetime and using my Apple ID and Password that I use for accessing iTunes and Mobile Me, but when I try to register the x@me.com email address it says its already in use by someone.

This is very confusing and goes away from Apple's ideal of one system .

Does anyone have a link into the tech guys for a fix?

I've also had this issue and it beggars belief that they could have something so stupid as a policy.

I have no less than 8 Apple devices that I use actively not to mention the family who have more.

I have an Itunes account and have bought a load of music and movies etc.

I also (foolishly) took a MobileMe subscription and hardly used it.

Now, when I try to register for Facetime I can't register the one and only email address that I use.

Apple support says even though they have been using that for purchases on Itunes, App Store, MobileMe, etc etc, I cannot use it for Facetime! And Facetime requires the address so people who know me and know my one and only email address can call me on Facetime.

No, instead, I must use another new email address!!

How totally stupid.

Support are really unhelpful on this issue as well. They keep talking about multiple accounts and the address being used on these accounts. These accounts are Itunes, MobileMe. And who do they belong to?? One person, ME!!!

Ah, NO! You have not addressed my concerns.

It is almost like they don't want any existing clients on Itunes and MobileMe to use Facebook.

I don't get it???? Help........

I agree. I did take out a Mobile Me account and did use it. I have aligned everything I have communications wise around my X@me.com email address and now Apple, the people who issued me with this account and encourage me to remain with them, are encouraging me to go and get an new email account and possibly ISP in order to use Facetime!!

I was thinking of upgrading my 3GS iPhone to the new iPhone but have that on hold now if I cant use Facetime with my recognised email address.

It is shocking that Apple Help have responded to you in this way, but I think it confirms that they know they have bobbed big time with this, but will they fix it? Maybe a letter to the main Mac focused magazines will help escalate this stupid situation?

Before I purchased my MacBookPro and subsequently iPad 2 and iPhone 4,I had Apple ID from iTunes. My Apple ID is different from my iTunes ID and when I tried to rectify the problem ie.follow the recommendations that the best thing to do is make your Apple ID your email address, the whole **** broke loose. All the Geniuses at Apple Store in Lancaster,PA were dumbfounded after spending my hour of One to One session,I was told that I should call Apple technical support.

I did.The gentleman who worked with me that evening tried EVERYTHING and when all attempts failed,he closed my account and gave me a new Apple ID which is my email.

Nevertheless, although,I now have Apple ID that works,my old Apple iTunes ID pops up whenever I have to update my Laptop software.

Personally, the idea of face time is good,it's execution is VERY,VERY POOOOOR.Let me say only one more thing-Apple should feel obligated to rectify this problem, since new customers are coming along, and I doubt that in this day and age of IT advancement there are going to be very few people who do not already have Apple ID,which most commonly is their primary email address.
