iMAC screen FOG

Just wondering if anyone out there is having an issue with screen FOG? I have a new iMAC with 27" screen bought primarily for photography editing.

I find if I turn it off overnight then turn it back on the screen will slowly develop a fog which then takes about 2 hours to clear. I can repeat the problem so I need to know if all iMAC screens do this if turned off?? - it is obviously condensation inside the screen and I can't edit my photos until it clears - very disruptive to photography editing. thanks - in anticipation of some advice! I did speak to my local supplier who said it isn't a "known" problem but I have seen a few comments about similar problems on the Web. Helen

Hi mikko - I was able to replicate the problem - image attached. Like you the problem didn't show up for a few months. I phoned Apple support as I have Apple Care protection plan - they were very helpful and responsive. The second level support are obviously aware of the problem and immediately arranged for Apple sub-contractors to replace the screen. Sub-contractors here in Aus were equally responsive and organised someone to come to my home and replace the screen - sounds good... the new screen (which was obviously re-cycled) was dead on arrival. The technician put my original one back as it worked fine if I didn't turn it off. I only had to wait a few days before the replacement for the replacement arrived. I am now using the 3rd screen and so far have not had the fog problem. However, I'm sure the replacement screen is recycled too and it is no where near as sharp as the original screen - which I just loved - when the fog wasn't there. I'm about to test the 3rd screen for fog as I'm away for a few days and will turn it off and give it a good test when I get back - I'll keep you posted. I hope this is helpful and good luck. regards Helen

Hi Helen,

hopefully your 3rd screen will we ok!

Before imac i've been using only macbooks and didn't have any problems with humidity. Now i just cranked up the a/c and there's no more condensation behind the display.

I don't see how changing the screen would solve any problems with humidity, especially if they replaced your screen with the one that's is not as sharp as the original one.

ps. the fog in the picture looks same as in my imac.

good luck!

Hi All - I have been away again for a few days and my new recycled screen has a different kind of fog. This is the 3rd screen I have had on my iMAC 27" since my purchase in mid January 2011. This new fog (condensation is on the outside of the screen) rather than the inside - two bands of moisture appear across the screen this time rather than the oval shape inside the screen last time. New condensation image is attached for community comment and ideas/solutions .... please don't tell me to just wipe it off!! I have tried that and it reappears - very disruptive to photography editing. The room I'm in is not humid - dry and current temperature range is between 10-20 deg Celcius.

Well, in my brand new iMac 27 today (rained all day by the way) and it WAS humid buy didn't realized I had to turn on the AC so after 15 minutes I got the fog just like in the pic above. I panicked! I still under the 30 day full return and wondering if should wait and use it only with ac or should i exchange it?

Pls give me your opp, thanks

Thanks for your prompt response!

I had turned off the 27 iMac and switched on the AC for 30 min till the fog was gone and it is gone. I turned it on and I am now using it without the fog and has not comed back.

Actually today rained all day and was indeed very humid and had not turned on the AC as just wanted to ck emails.

I have had this iMac for 20 days and can still exchange it but would rather not as I love it!

Please be honest with me and tell me if this is now a recuring thing or if I use it with the AV it wont come back?

Thanks for your support!!!!

The final solution and for the past few months was to move the pc to a room with A/C with cool and dry air and the problem was completly solved. Seems to me the huge glass and the hight operation temp in the pc provoked the condensation.

Do it fast, I don't think recurring condensation is good but don't forget that the glass is completly separated from the insides of the pc so the condensation actually occurs outside of the pc.

@christoperfromsioux falls, thank you so much for your suggestion. I was in a complete panic today when I noticed my screen was half fogged over. My 27" iMac is geriatric in computer terms, and I thought it was dying, and we really don't have the money for a new one. I was ready to run to the Mac Doctor, however at your suggestion, I popped off the screen (using the suction cup from my stick-on hummingbird feeder). A couple of swipes with a micro-static cloth, and crisis averted!

@akshat shrivastava, I will leave the hummingbird feeder up, and try your hairdryer solution next. Thank you everyone for the excellent suggestions and for helping me not waste $$ running to the Mac Doctor!

By the way, I should mention it is a warm day and 100% humidity where I am, and I am being stubborn and cheap and not turning on the A/C. It is not just my Mac that is damp and foggy today!
