Built-in iSight isn't working?

Alright, before I start, I know there are other posts for this problem. I've tried all of those solutions, and none of them have worked.

Whenever I try and use my built-in iSight, nothing happens. The green light turns on, but the camera doesn't respond. If I'm using Photobooth, the green light turns on but the screen is just black and taking a picture does nothing. If I'm using programs like Skype or the Google Chat thing, the green light turns on but the camera doesn't respond. Also, with Google Chat for SURE (I'm not sure about the other ones) I am unable to hear the person I am talking to, but I can hear an echo of myself typing, breathing, talking, using the trackpad, etc. And apparently the person can hear me as well (but I cannot hear them). I don't know if this info is relevant but it's really annoying.

I went to the Apple support page for troubleshooting the built-in iSight, did ALL the suggested steps, and still it doesn't work.

Unfortunately my luck has chosen until AFTER my warranty expired on my late 2009 Macbook Pro. So thats just great.

I don't know if this is a result of something I did, or if its an internal problem with the iSight itself, or WHAT... but any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

P.S., sorry if I didn't give enough info or if its submitted wrong or something. First post.

Hi,

Do you have the Google Video Plug-in for Intel Macs Installed ?

Is there any chance the Web Browser is open when also using Photo Booth ?

Which version of Skype (version 5 seems to be suspect)

Secondary to that a Major outage has been reported on their network (which technically means it is a Microsoft outtage)

It would be very helpful to know which apps you have tried the Camera in ?
Quicktime Player ?

iMovie ?

Comic Life ? (if it was Bundled on your Mac)

iChat ?

Try System Preferences > Accounts > (your account) > Click the Current account Pic and choose the Snap Shot option.

Have you tried things in a separate User Account (I know you said you tried "Everything". I am just trying to get a clear picture (pun intended) of what "Everything" is)

If you click on the Apple Menu icon and hold the ALT( ⌥) key down the second item become the launch spot for the System Profiler

Can you Screen Shot the bit in Hardware > USB for the camera ?

(Use the Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) + Shift (⇧)+ 4 and draw round it)

Do you also have iGlasses installed ?

Any other Camera app that you have downloaded/installed ?

The Google plug-in WAS installed when this originally started happening. I tried deleting it, and that didn't fix it, I tried reinstalling it, and that didn't fix it either.

The Skype version is 5.1.0.935. I've only recently started using it within the last couple of days, so I'm not sure that has anything to do with it.

I've tried the camera within Photobooth, Skype, Google Chat, tinychat, yahoo chat, I tried iMovie and iChat just now upon your suggestion, too. Neither worked. Same problem. Green light turns on, but the screen just remains black.

I just tried the System Preferences > Accounts > My account > Clicking my current pic and clicking the snapshot option. The green light came on, and the "3, 2, 1" countdown popped up, but then it froze before the countdown started. Cancel and the X to close the window were unclickable. I had to force quit system preferences.

I HAVE tried using it on a separate account, but only with the Google Chat and Photobooth. Same results.

Here is the image you requested.

I do not have iGlasses installed (I'm not even entirely sure what it is). I have installed quite a few apps since I got my Macbook Pro about a year and a half ago. But the only one I can see on my Applications list that even uses my iSight would be the Livestream Broadcaster. And I've had that over a year with no problems, and I haven't used it in probably 6 months. The problem with the iSight has only been happening a couple of weeks now.

If it helps, the last thing I used my iSight for was Photobooth. I took a couple of pictures of myself, and I went to use Photobooth again a couple of days later and thats when this stuff started happening.

Thanks for the thorough help, though. 😀

Hi,

Great and clear info.

Could you repost the pic by highlighting the iSight in the top Right hand panel so it's details appear in the bottom right (that current lists the info about the track pad) ?

Hopefully it will list similar sort of info to the track pad (none missing)

The speed on that one should be 480Mb/sec when you get there.

Baby Boomer has managed to get the thread moved. (I found it looking in the iSight Forum).

It is late where I am and it will be a while before I pick up on new replies.

In the meantime can you remove any other USB external Devices connected (Eject any Hard Drive/USB Sticks first)

Then Shut down the Computer.

As it is a Lap top remove the mower cable if connected.
Wait 15 Mins

Then Restart the computer.

This normally resets the Firewire ports but hopefully may help the Mac to recheck the Device numbering system for the USB devices. (And as you can see there are several internal ones)

Does your Remote launch Front Row ? (Has it even been linked to do so?)

Is Blue Tooth On or Off ?

(Other internal USB items)

Have you tried downloading the COMBO version of the OS Update and installing that over what you have ?

I have not forgotten about the Sound issue but that is separate. (I will get to it later)

Google Plug-in removal.

There should be a reference to it in Hard Drive/Library/Internet Plug-ins

In Hard Drive/Library/Application Support is there a Google Folder ?

There should be a Uninstaller inside

Run the uninstaller.

Delete the folder as well afterwards (Drag to the Trash)

Restart the computer as the folders, over this side as it were, load when the computer starts up.

Hi all.

I am having this exact same issue. I have followed all the additional instructions brought up in this thread,

I'm currently living in Berlin, Germany.. and don't have the luxury of an Apple store (surprising for a capital) for a few more months. I'm running a mid-2010 27" imac with an intel i5 and the latest version of Snow leopard.

My bluetooth is off, google plug-ins have been removed. Naturally, Im a bit frustrated that this problem is ongoing and I'm hoping that someone has some additional suggestions.

any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

So you have tried the camera in other apps ?

You have tried in those same apps but in a different Mac User ?

You have tried Safe Boot ?

You have Reset the PMU/SMC ?

What app are you trying to use it in ?

(There hints in your post it is a Browser and a Flash based site but I am guessing)

I take it the Blue Tooth thing was only to cover the fact it is connected by USB internally ?

Does the camera show in the System Profiler ?

Realistically if the Safe Boot or SMC/PMU reset has not shown the camera in the System Profiler only an Engineer at a Store or Apple Service Centre is likely to be able to help.

This page may help if you have/need to send it to Apple.

Hi, Many thanks for your prompt response!

Other apps and other user accounts make no difference unfortunately. I've tried the safe boot and the reset option. I've tested the isight in imovie, ichat and photobooth.

Camera does show in the system profiler.

I was worried it might come to a service visit. Living here you don't really need a car.. until you need to lug a 27" imac about the city,

I believe there are 2 authorized service centres in my district, hopefully my German is solid enough to get my point across to them.

I hope the new generation imacs are not similarly afflicted. It could be stupid, but I was a little concerned that all the heat that builds up at the top of the display could be a factor. Meaning the issue is a physical one rather than a software thing. Although the green light on the camera is on, I'm tempted to still not rule out a loose connection or something. Any thoughts?

Thanks again and I'll be sure to post back if I find they have a fix at the service centre,

Hi,

Can you take a Snap of the System Profiler and post it here ?

We would need to see the iSight selected so it's details show in the bottom right hand panel.

Snap Shot

Use Apple (CMD) Key + Shift + 4 key and then drag the cross hairs araound the area you want.

The pic will be places on the Desktop.

In the post here click the camera icon and use Browse to find the Pic on the Desktop.

It should show the Serial number, the manufacturer, the speed rating and so on.

You seem to be stuck in that awful halfway house place where the device shopws up but nothing seems to be able to access it.

Try deleting com.apple.iChat.plist from your Home Folder/Library/Preferences (Drag it to the Trash)

Restart iChat if Open.

Hi,

That seems fine.

See my edit to my previous post about deleting the .plist

(I am not actually expecting anything to change but it will sort of "Prove" it is a System wide thing)

I have to Search for the next bit about whether you have a certain Extension or framework (I can't remember which) which turns the video into something apps can use. (I will post back in a while)
