Does anyone run their iTunes library from a NAS?

I had my iTunes library initially on my internal iMac HDD, then it grew too big, so went on an external USB disk. Then I though I have a NAS why not have it on there and out of the way as such.

So yesterday I copied over the iTunes folder to my NAS, disconnected external HDD, opened up iTunes and pointed it to my NAS. It seemed to open fine, and everything there seems great.

So few questions for people that run an iTunes library off a NAS.

What is speed like? mine seems ok, but get a few beach balls, any way to speed it up? (I'm on an oldish iMac Alu 2007, 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM)

Now my Time Machine wont back up the iTunes folder as its on a NAS, I know to copy the iTunes folder every month onto my other backup external drive, but what is a good option for backup? no way to get TM to?

Is this the best way to run an iTunes library as I'm sure others have even bigger libraries than me, (mine currently 90Gb), or what other solutions?

I also use my Apple TV 1 with iTunes. Wil I see any performance hit over it now being on the NAS? my iMac is wired to the router, to NAS, whereas my Apple TV 1 is wireless N, all my house is wireless N, and thats what I've set my router to Wireless N only.

Any other hints

cheers

i recently moved my library to a NAS, used to have it on a directly attached firewire 800 drive. i don't see any difference in speed at all, however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (i.e. gigabit speed as opposed to wireless, which will give you a max of 300 mbps).

your Mac should be up to the task - i'm using a 2009 Mac Mini base config (2.26 GHz/2 GB) as my media server.

TM won't back up from network drives. you might be able to use ChronoSync but i never tried myself.

my NAS came with excellent backup options built-in so i use a USB drive connected to the NAS's USB port to back up the RAID.

it's as good as any. i would prefer a directly attached drive but i was desperate for space and found the NAS to be a good value for money. my NAS is expandable to 12 TB raw space (~ 9 TB in a RAID 5 configuration). since i'm constantly adding content (especially HD movies and tv shows), i needed a solution that will provide sufficient space for a few years to come.

you will have to try. you can always use powerline adapters to connect the TV to your router if wifi doesn't work for you.

Any other hints

i recommend RAID 5 for the NAS. drives will fail, RAID controllers may fail. back up the RAID or have a good backup scheme for your precious media files in place.

so you're not getting gigabit speed. you're getting 100mbps , which is slower than a wireless-n connection (300mbps).

i believe your troubles stem from that fact !

I'm not dure how to change it to 1000BaseT

either you don't have the proper ethernet cables (again, you need CAT5 or CAT6) or your router isn't capable of gigabit speed.

I have an older Apple Airport base station (Wireless N) to setup still, will this help?

possibly. what kind (express or extreme) is it and what is the model number ?

So you think this is the "fault", 100 is not fast enough for when I want to add something to library? This is the reason iTunes hangs for about 15mins and all the console messages?

My AEBS is an older one I've bought off eBay, a A1143, it does have gigabit 1000 but haven't had a chance to set it up yet.

I appreciate your help I really do but 100 to 1000 shouldn't make iTunes hang like this if the library is on a NAS. what about the console messages about throttling and transaction etc?

Cheers

i'm not positive but it's a possibility. another possibility is that you're using incorrect of faulty ethernet cables.

set it up and see if it makes a difference. you may find this article useful.

i honestly have no idea what exactly the messages mean. again, it could be an incorrect or faulty ethernet cable.

FWIW, check out these google search results.

I will try and test my cable and get my AEBS setup but what I can't get is the massive pause and spinny wheel for about 10mins before something happens and the files start to show adding to the library in the iTunes status bar.

My cable is ok for everything else I do on my Mac, Internet surfing, copying files directly to and from the NAS in finder, streaming video from NAS etc. Everything is ok apart from iTunes library which I have just migrated from an external USB to the NAS

Ok I got my AEBS (older type) setup ok now. I went to the Ethernet settings as above and it still showed 100T speed, I set it to manual and changed to 1000T, applied but then I lost connection to the AEBS, so I can only summise that the cables don't support it?

I had to change back to auto to get Ethernet healthy again, so looks like I cant use 1000T. Tried again with NAS, but same spinny beach ball.

I get the weird throttling response start again in 50sec message in console all the time, from NASnavigator2, I've tried to uninstall NASNavigator2 but although not in applications I cant find the rest of it.

oh well, looks like cant use a NAS with iTunes in my case 😢

Just add my comments. It is very important to have the NAS awake and mounted before launching itunes. My MBP will take a while to mount the NAS after opening the lid. That being said, it have the spinning ball issues all the time with and without wireless.

Added an album but seem the same speed as before, ie very very very slow.

couple of things to check:

  • if your Mac is connecting to the network wirelessly, run an ethernet cable from it to the router. turn off airport and add an album. what happens ?
  • make sure the ethernet cable going from the NAS to the router is okay or use a different one for testing. it needs to be a CAT5 or CAT6 cable.
  • do you have the software firewall enabled on your Mac ?

Also when I open iTunes it always asks the 1st time of opening iTunes after my NAS has been asleep to open/create library. I chose it from the NAS, next time I open its fine.

make sure the NAS is awake and the share mounted before you launch iTunes.

Ok I'm wondering if should go back to a USB drive? I have a 500Gb USB drive. I'm wondering wether to use it for this, only putting the movies, apps etc on, and leaving the movies on my NAS, and just reference them to my iTunes library.

I'm more reliant on iTunes now as I also have an Apple TV 2, so Home Sharing is required. I even have a AEBS because of the waking feature required.

At the moment everytime my iMac sleeps, if iTunes isnt open, I get the "cannot find iTunes library.." I have to navigate. It seems my NAS isnt auto mounting, although I can see it in Finder bar, I have to click on it in Finder to connect.

Am I doing something wrong there?

Hi,

I've also recently moved my entire iTunes Media to a NAS. After having had waaay to many spinning beach balls, I saw a few posts that provided me with an answer. Basically, your actual library file (.itl) should be stored locally on your computer and your media itself should be on your NAS. The post I read basically said that if you are changing things to any iTunes media files, iTunes first has to access the library file and actually change the information about the file in its database, i.e., the library file (.itl). I tried it and it worked like a charm for me. I basically created a new library on my local drive and then:

iTunes --> Preferences --> Advanced = Changed the iTunes Media Folder location to point to my main folder where I've put all my media files on my NAS.

The only hitch I'm having now is that for some reason, when I update a new app, it stores it locally in the folder where my library is (?) instead of storing on my NAS with the other apps...still haven't figured out why it's doing that...

Hope this helps!

It worked for me...
