YouTube Fullscreen Choppy Playback with mid 2011 iMac

Hello,

I have a BTO 27" iMac with 3.4 GHz i7 and the 6970M 2GB graphics card. Everything else is stock. The problem I'm having is that with every YouTube video at any quality (240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p) played in fullscreen, the playback is choppy. It's not my internet connection because I've even let the video load completely. Also when I exit fullscreen, it's perfectly smooth. This is very surprising to me. However, with Vimeo and other flash videos at fullscreen the playback is nice and smooth. Has anyone else experienced this? What do you recommend? In the mean time I've been doing the scroll to zoom to fullscreen videos.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mid 2011, 3.4 GHz i7, 6790m 2GB

I don’t think you have not received an answer because people are ignoring you. It’s just something that must stump people since your machine shouldn’t be at fault. You can play 720p and 1080p video on the iMac from YouTube perfectly smoothly until you select the full-screen display option in the YouTube Window and then it stutters throughout the video playback? But other companies’ video is smooth on Full-screen!

From the Apple menu, select About This Mac. In the Hardware section, look at Graphics. Does everything look normal there? Does the problem occur the first time you play video after you have completely shutdown your computer?

Thanks for your reply. What you restated is correct. With any browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), YouTube within the window plays fine until I click fullscreen. When I exit fullscreen it's back to smooth. I checked the Graphics section and everything looks fine. This is what I see:

I just did a complete shutdown and booted it up again. Still choppy. I'm guessing it's an Adobe Flash thing but if no one else with the same setup as my iMac is having the same problem maybe I should bring it up with Apple.

UPDATE:

So I'm pretty sure it's Flash but I don't know why it's specific for YouTube. I ended up finding "ClickToPlugin" for Safari through another discussion about choppy playback. This forces Safari to try to load an HTML5 video player first. With that I'm able to play all the YouTube videos fullscreen at any quality nice and smooth. I guess there's going to have to be a Flash update or something.

With those specifications on your machine, you should be handling any video with ease unless the video itself has issues. That is strange that the choppiness is only on YouTube fullscreen. Perhaps the version of the encoded Flash on YouTube is not the same quality as the other sources you play without issue. Good you have a solution... HTML5!

It's an older version of Firefox (3.0.19), not sure if that makes a difference.

Still annoying as Safari is my default browser and would prefer to use it for fullscreen Flash videos.

Maybe an update will fix it, in the meantime I've opted in for the HTML5 version of YouTube. It doesn't quite give full screen, but it does allow you to make it the full size of the browser, so you can make it nearly as big.
