"Photos" shows only ~ 5% of my photos. Help!

This is in reference to the 2nd item at top of Library tab, "Photos," just below "Projects," and above "Places." Of my 21,000+ photos, 697 show up when clicking Photos. The 697 are unrelated. Some are old; some are new. Some have been edited; others have not. All 21,000+ photos are actually in the library, and can be called up with Smart Albums, and everything else works everywhere. I can find no way to force Aperture to display the rest of the photos with this option, which means I have to create a smart album every time I want to search for a photo. Is there some kind of fix? It took me more than a person-month of work to migrate from iPhoto + Keyword Manager over to Aperture since Aperture doesn't know how to migrate hierarchical keywords, and I have more than 2000 of them, so starting over is not an option.

Don't worry. This is not uncommon and is easy to fix. You need the Double-Double-Reverse Caggiano.

Try this:

1. select criteria for any smart album

2. while that HUD is open, select Photos in inspector and then clear the filters which have been set.

A filter, as Badunit suggested, was on as it turns out, but I could find no way to open up anything that would show it, nor could I figure out any pattern. Once Kirby Krieger's answer pointed me to the "Double-Double-Reverse Caggiano," it became clear: They all contained the text, "shi". As I mentioned, I spent weeks tricking Aperture into letting me import my hierarchy of keywords, one-by-one, unmolested. It is possible, in the depths of my despair, that I began typing some word or other that started with the letters, "shi." At any rate, the DDRC revealed the HUD for Photos, and I was able to remove the suppression. And, instead of 21,000 photos, it turns out I have 23,368 photos. Now, if I could just figure out why my wife complains so incessantly about having to wait around while I take just another could hundred photos, life would be perfect! Thanks to you both for the guidance!

Hello Kirby,

I have the problem you were talking about, not being able to see my photos in the photo selection. I did try what you suggested. I did not have a smart album, so I created one. Selected the photos, then clicked 'photos' in the inspector, looked at the keyword hud, the inspector hud. the filter controls. I saw no sign of spurious characters.

Am I missing something? Not doing something correctly?

Always best to start a new thread. Posting to an answered thread is mildly unhelpful.

In the meantime:

Don't know what you mean when you say "Selected the photos" above.

Create a Smart Album. Because it is a Smart Album, it will have search criteria listed in the Filter HUD. Bring up the Filter HUD by clicking the magnifying glass icon at the right end of the line showing the title of the Smart Album in your Library tab of the Inspector.

Leave this Filter HUD open.

Click "Photos" at the top of the Library tab of the Inspector.

Clear all of the Rules shown in the Filter HUD.

Close the Filter HUD.

This should remove the hidden filter which is (likely) being applied to your Photos container.
