2 macbooks/1 ip address?

I recently got a new Macbook Pro. My son now has my old Macbook Air. First, we cannot both connect to the internet at the same time at home. We have an Xbox, 2 iPhones and a Tivo that have no problem connecting at the same time along with a laptop.

Second, "out in the world" my Pro cannot connect to the web via some wifi spots the Air had no problem with. I get the message "another computer is using that ip address." The Air is nowhere near the area.

Does anyone have solutions?

Thanks,

Angie

This is probably due to a bad setting in System Preferences > Networks

Perhaps the easiest way to solve this is to create a new "Location". Follow these steps:

System Preferences > Network

Select AirPort from the list on the left

Click on the Location combo box and select Edit Locations...

Click on + to create a new location entry and call it Home

Click on Advanced...

On the Airport tab, add your home network name.

On the TCP/IP tab, click on Renew DHPC Lease and wait a few seconds. This should find your router and get you an IP address something like 192.168.xxx.xxx

On the Proxies tab, select Auto Proxy Discovery and Passive FTP Mode

Click on OK, then on Apply

Fingers crossed!
