Why is my Macbook plagued by spinning beachball

I just updated my daughters Macbook to 10.6.7. The OS was put in as a clean install after erasing the hard drive. The Macbook has 4GB of Ram and we are not running alot of applications, manly Safari and Mail We are frustrated by the spinning beach ball using Safari and printing.

How do I find out why the Macbook is freezing up with the beach ball?

Are ther some common reasons or causes for getting the beachball?

How can I troubleshoot this and correct the problem?

The beach ball has been banished. The new version of OSX and the epson installer cd

did not have drivers that worked with 10.6.7 and Epson printer we just bought.

Solution: Downloaded the newest printer driver from Epson.

Then ran Apple software update. Volia!!
