Q: where will my data be after I migrate from one mac to another?

I can't find my music or photos which I just transferred from my old mac?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

If you migrated on the first use of the computer, it'll be in your home folder. If you've already set up an user account, the Migration Assistant will move it to a new one.

A freshly installed OS counts as new.

Thanks. What do you mean home folder? Where will MA move the data?

Home folder is the one with the house icon and your short name.

Music will probably be in home / music / iTunes / iTunes Music

Pictures will either be in home / Pictures or whatever folder you had them in on the other Mac. If they were in iPhoto, that's where they should be migrated to.

If MA has created anew account, they will be in the home folder for that account.

Thanks. I have located the folders but they don't allow me to open them as it is saying I don't have permission to see the contents...? What now?

That's the problem with Migration Assistant. Much better to do the migration with Setup Assistant on first boot.

Are they in your own home folder or one created by MA? And have you given your account on the new Mac the same short name as the one on the old Mac?
