There were and maybe still are ways to get there though, for extra cash. A company called Troll Touch was marketing flexible resistive touch overlays to fit on iMacs. And there was a company in California (started to meet special eds needs I seem to remember) that did actual full conversions - took the iMac apart and replaced the screen, and included their own overlays to the OS to make it a touch-use machine. Unfortunately I cannot recall the company's name.

Wait, maybe I was thinking of troll touch for both thoughts? - http://www.trolltouch.com/

Windows 8 computer with touch screen is the cheap solution, and I have to say it works very well.

Sorry, but I don't consider Windows-anything a solution to the issue of how to use OS X on a touch screen. 😝

(I and many Apple users use Apple hardware because we want OS X as our operating system - not remotely interested in using Windows on my personal machines or any machine where I have a choice in OS).

OK so the only solutions for using mac os x with touch screen are Troll Touch for iMac 27" and 21"! There is also the Zorro Macsk overlay only for iMac 21".

The SlipCover solution from TrollTouch seems interesting except the screens are too hot to use after a few hours.

It's been a few month I'm looking for a solution to make my 27" 2013 iMac touchable. I find the troll touch solution too expensive to be honest.

Sharp would seem to make a touch screen available for Mac OS X.

This is the reason why I turned myself towards windows. I work in music production, and use some softwares with virtual knobs and faders on screen. Thus you can imagine the importance of touch facilities to me.

The Sharp monitor is interesting - if they can come out with a driver-overlay to use their 3rd party monitor, that would be slick as it should work then for any Apple computer - even a laptop.

I am glad that windows does work for what you want, honestly. It would be nice if there was a simple or less expensive alternative for Apple users wanting or needing a touch screen interface, and maybe some day there will be. But for now, you have to go with what is available and works for you.

I use Windows 7 at work, since I have no choice, and I am not ragingly anti-Windows (heck, I even used "interface Manager" aka Windows 1.0 in its day). It is just not the OS I choose for myself when I have the choice. I also do not want a touch screen computer though, so I have no dog in the race - it is just not the way I work when sitting at my desk with my dual big monitors.
