Transferring data from 3GS to Iphone 4

HI All,

Please help...

I have today got my wife a new white iphone4. She currently had a 3gs.

before moving the sims over etc. i did a backup of the 3gs. and selected transfer purchases (for the paid apps).

I then put the new sim in and activated the new iphone4. However i ran into a few issues:

I have a lot of contacts and apps on my 3gs however when i plugged the new IP4 into itunes it gave me 2 options. create a new device or backup of the 3gs.

Now i was quite happy to create a backup of the 3gs as this would resolve issue of moving contacts and the pictures, however the only issue is Itunes then calls my new IP4 the name name as the 3gs which was "Alsions Iphone 3GS" which obviously i dont want my IP4 to be called as its not the 3gs (and i cannot see any way to change the device/profile name)

I cannot also see any option to backup contacts from the 3GS to then copy onto the IP4. The only option i see is the sync with outlook option etc which i dont want to do as i dont want any of my outlook contacts synced onto / or associated with my Iphone, nor do i want itunes to overwrite any contacts that are saved on my old 3gs otherwise ill be lost without them!

Please can someone tell me how i can copy my contacts over from the 3GS to IP4 without making the IP4 a backup of the 3GS ??

Second issue my wife has a lot of apps on her 3gs. some she wants to keep some she doesnt. (have a clear out as its a new phone) however 1 app in particualr that she uses several times a day which shes been putting a lot of data into over the past month i wanted to transfer over. (yes i could d/l it again but i will loose the data already input for future predicitons etc)

Again when i did the backup of the 3gs i assumed it would copy this app over aswell. however i cannot see that this app has been copied.

when i plug the 3gs back into itunes and select app tab, i can see the enlarged display of the phone in itunes and can see the app i want on page 2, but its not listed in the list of apps that i can tick/sync.

How can i select this app to be backed up and then sync it with the new IP4?

Please help

Contacts are included with the iPhone's backup. Transferring the backup for one iPhone to another is all or none - you can't select which items included with backup are transferred and which items aren't transferred. With Windoze, you can sync contacts with the Outlook address book or with the address book app used by Outlook Express with XP and by Windows Mail with Vista and Windows 7 called Windows Contacts. If you use Outlook and don't want to sync contacts between your iPhone and the Outlook address book, you can sync your iPhone contacts with the Windows Contacts. The sync process for contacts with a supported address book application on your computer is a bidirectional or true sync process with one exception.

The one exception is if a supported address book application on your computer is empty and your iPhone includes contacts. Before syncing contacts with a supported address book application on your computer that is empty, enter one contact in the supported address book application on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app is included with the iPhone's backup. 3rd party apps are not included with the iPhone's backup. All iTunes content on the iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, etc., and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. With Sync Apps selected under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, after downloading an app direct with your iPhone, the app will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so. This also allows for downloading an app with iTunes on your computer and installing the app on your iPhone via the iTunes sync process - by selecting the app under the Apps tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. To remove an app from your iPhone without deleting the app, deselect the app under the Apps tab followed by a sync. To re-install the app again later, reselect the app under the Apps tab followed by a sync. Your various selections under every tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes are included with your iPhone's backup.

For future reference in regards to photos and videos in the Camera Roll, they are included with your iPhone's backup but not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data. Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. When there are photos/videos in the Camera Roll, your iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected to your computer.

1.Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes, which is currently iTunes 10.5. You can download the latest version of iTunes from this link. Please install it after you download it.

2.Connect your current iPhone to iTunes and sync it. Verify that your original iPhone is backed up. For more information on how to do this, see iPhone: About backups.

3.Connect your new iPhone to iTunes (on the same computer you used to back up your current iPhone).

4.iTunes will ask you if you want to restore from a backup or set up your new iPhone as a new phone.
