Apple doesn't seem to give those that frequent these boards with iOS devices the ability to "upload" avatars.
I say this because the option to upload an avatar is "grayed" out for me, in my profile section.
Anyone know why?

Are you referring to uploading a custom avatar? If so, unfortunately, you need to have a certain number of points (500 if I remember correctly and /be at a level 2 (or 3, not sure), in order to get a custom avatar.
I'm sure you'll be at that level in no time!

Ahhh. That makes sense. But can you upload avatars with an iOS device?

You might want to consider asking that question in the appropriate iOS forum - might get more knowledgeable answers over there. I don't have one, so I can't help with that.
No. You cannot upload an avatar from an iOS device.
Notice that the Choose File button is grayed out for me (Level 7; 26,000 points), as well...
