Is an Appletalk Zone necessary?

All the printers in our network print through our AppleTalk Zone "AZONE". It is hosted by an old good for nothing else compaq server that I'm itching to pull the plug on.

We have a mixed environment with mostly all OSX stations and a couple of OS9 stations and one PC station. The macs and our xserve are all are bonded to the AZONE under network/appletalk. The printers; HPs and Canon's with Fiery's are all connected to this same AZONE as well.

I don't want to print through IP, contrary to what I've heard its slower and less reliable. If I just go and yank the plug on the compaq with we lose all connectivity with these printers? Can I print without a specified AppleTalk Zone, and how do I change it to "none" ? (the dropdown menu doesn't allow any other selections)

took care of it myself... don't need an appletalk "named" zone just make sure you have a os9 station with HP laserjet utility and verify all printers are not on a named appletalk network and everything will go fine...

worked for me, then readded all printers on each station one by one.. kinda a pita, but works
