Kernal Crashes when running Netflix

I have been having Kernal Crashes constantly when streaming Netflix videos. Netflix sent me to Microsoft to talk with the Silverlight people about their plugin. Their tech support was useless and reinstalling the plugin on multiple occasions did nothing. Called Netflix again and this time they said it was a Mac OS issue and the gal recommended contacting Apple or getting advice from the support forum. As this is a problem that probably affects many others, I'd like to start a thread.

The crashes happen primarily when running in full screen, vs. running the movie in a window. But they can happen either way, and they usually come on with no warning. I have had other times where the movie skipped, or the plugin itself crashed with an error message in the browser indicating this was the case.

Here is the latest crash reporter from Library>Logs>Crash Reporter:

Hi Barney,

Thank you for the help! OK...didn't make the connection between integod and Intego Content Barrier Software. Thought this software was uninstalled, but found a few rogue parts still hiding in places around the hard drive. Worked for 2 movies, but had another kernal crash. There are multiple crash reports from this.

I've reset Safari again, restarted, and done the disk repair utiilities. Will watch a movie again, and if I have another kernal crash will post the crash report.

OK that's done. Still having crashes.

I run Activity Monitor and a few other utility status apps in the menu bar...could these be the culprits?

The Kernal Panics have also happened when running videos from news feeds (e.g. MSNBC) in the browser as well, so it isn't just Netflix. I do have my doubts about MS Silverlight still, but it seems something else may be interferring.

There are often other errors such as the Netflix Movie screen going black with a message that there was a plug-in error (has to be Silverlight), or the entire screen of the mac (and the movie freezes) but audio continues.

So, I'm having the same issues. I switched from Safari to Chrome in hopes that it would be more stable while I watched video, but somehow it isn't. Silverlight is definitely the problem: I rarely if ever get crashes while I'm not watching (silverlight) video, and I often have crashes while I am watching (silverlight) video. Anyway, here's the crash log from a moment ago:

Hi Barney- The above came from another mac user with the same problem.

I removed most of those extensions but still had the panics when running streaming video.

I've done some research on kernal panics and most happen from software and not hardware issues. I've just run the Apple Hardware Test (which comes computer specific on the install CD #1) and it is pointing to a bad memory card. I'm going to try swapping and reseeeding the cards and see if that works. If not, I'll pull each card out and run the tests to try to isolate which card is bad. I understand most companies warrant their memory for life, so hopefully I can get this resolved. Will update.

Did you reverse that finding? Because it is the opposite, and your solution path leads towards hardware being the problem.

Hardware is predominately the problem with KPs, but the drivers (kext) for that hardware can also cause problems. If you see random things in the backtrace that don't point to one item, then memory is a likely culprit.

ARRGH! Big mistake/my bad. I meant to say "most kernal panics happen from HARDWARE and not software issues."

Have run Apple Hardware Test (comes with the install CD) and it points to a memory problem. I have two Crucial 1GB chips in place and have run each chip independently in each slot and get no error codes. But when they are both in place, then error codes are produced. I called Apple Care Help line and they believe it to be either a memory or logic board problem. They said Silverlight and Flash are both memory and computer intensive and push computers to the limit. They suggested taking the macbook to my Authorized Dealer and having them run the Apple Service Diagnostic Test (about a 3-4 hour cruncher) to islolate the problem. Repairing the logic board, if that is the problem will cost $299. Replacing the memory chips would be $29.99. You can guess where I'm hoping the decimal will be...

Will keep this post updated.

HURRAY! Problem seems to be solved. The Apple Service Diagnostic Test identified it as a bad memory chip. I will contact Crucial and see if I can get a new one as I was told these are usually warranteed for life.

Interesting how Microsoft and Netflix did not have the answer to this problem. Clearly there are others who probably are in the same boat.

I suggest, if you are having a similar streaming problem, that you first run your Apple Hardware Test and then utilize the Apple Store or Authorized Dealer to run the Apple Service Diagnostic Test, if necessary. Your problem may indeed be software related, but kernal panics, I'm told, generally point to a hardware issue.

Thanks to all who have weighed in and helped on this thread!

Gotta go watch a Netflix movie now! Happy streaming!
