Why does my mac transfer files so slow compared to a PC?

I am not very good at computers, but i noticed that my friend's computer (a PC) transfers files way faster than mine, and i don't think has better hardware than me. when i transfer files to a flash drive it takes around 30 mins to fully transfer 8 gigs of files, and his PC takes half the time. any ideas why his computer transfer files faster? can some one tell me what might be the difference between his PC and my MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro has:

Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Hard Drive: 750.16 TOSHIBA MK755MGSXF Media

30 mins. for 8 GB seems too long even for USB 2.0. If the flash drive is working at 60 MB/sec., the max speed for USB 2.0, it should take about 2.5 minutes to transfer the whole contents.

It may be slower because there are other USB peripherals on your Mac's USB bus...printer/scanner, display card, etc.?

USB flash memory has a format, just like a drive. Perhaps you'd get faster performance if you formatted the USB stick in the Apple format; (but I can't imagine that's the cause) or there's some other hangup with that hardware. Try another USB stick. If you buy a new one, insert it into the Mac, but before using it, go to Disk Utility and format it as Mac Extended.
