how to check/fix ATV2 internet connection (connects to local network fine)?

new ATV2 out of the box connects fine to local network through WiFi as well as wired (using DHCP in both cases), but isn't able to connect to the internet. Hence I'm not able to connect to iTunes Store and it isn't recognizing either HomeShare or iTunes userid+pwd (same for both); not sure if that's because it needs the internet connection or not.

I can get AirPlay to work, controlled from either PC or iPhone, but that's about it. iTunes on the PC can see the ATV as an output selection.


Any thoughts/recommendations on how to check (is there a diagnostic or log anywhere) and/or fix the internet connection?

I checked and double-checked both against the protocol/port list (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2463). I've disabled the firewall on my router (which is configured as a gateway); unless I configure the ATV IP manually there's no way to explicitly identify ports to pass-through.

In the current setting all outbound TCP traffic is allowed to go anyhow. It's not clear what public services (URL, protocol, port) ATV tries to access. Unless it's trying to route traffic via one of my computers that are part of the home-sharing iTunes configuration?? I've double-checked the firewall ports on the PC's as well and those appear correct as well.

From my network monitoring tool I only see some multi-cast DNS traffic coming from the ATV device; nohting else of interest.


Is there anything I can look/check on the ATV (diagnostic or usb port) on what exactly it's doing and what's failing?

Unfortunately there is no log or diagnostic reports available, resolution of network issues are usually achieved by trial and error.


Breaking matters down, the first issue that attracts attention is that it is unable to connect to the Internet, computer/iTunes settings are unlikely to have any effect on whether the Apple TV can connect to the Internet or not and the issue seems to be somewhere within your router, assuming there are no hardware issues anywhere.


I assume the IP address the network has given the Apple TV is correct and isn't self assigned.
