Plam not coming up in iSync

When I open iSync and go to Device and click Add Device with my Palm connected it says I must use Hot Sync Manager. What is this? How do you sync a Palm to iCal. It will sync to its own calendar (when I loaded the Palm CD it downloaded its own calendar), but not to iCal.

Under Mac OS X 10.3.9 and earlier with iSync 1.5 or earlier, you do not add your Palm device using the Add Device… option of the iSync Devices menu. Instead, you download and install the iSync Palm Conduit 1.2 from the Apple Downloads area, then launch the HotSync Manager [or use the HotSync menu of the Palm Desktop] to configure your conduit.

The iSync Palm Conduit appears in the Finder simply as Apple, and in the HotSync Manager as iSync Conduit. Double-clicking on it in the list will open a dialog box in which you choose the option to Enable synching for this Palm device. When you next launch iSync, your device will appear in the main window, where you can press the Tungsten icon to drop down a configuration pane to set the parameters of your synchronization.

Mac OS X 10.4 and later and iSync 2 and later follow a different procedure altogether, but the still do not select the Add Device… option in iSync. Instead, they select Enable Palm OS Syncing… from the same menu, and follow the instructions which appear. Part of that process is the installation and configuration of an updated iSync Palm Conduit for iSync 2 and later. It is not the same conduit that you need to download and install in your configuration.

Without which software? Your iPod does not require either the iSync Palm Conduit or the Missing Sync, but under Mac OS 10.3.9 with versions of iTunes prior to 4.8, iSync is required.

If you are using iTunes 4.8 or later, iSync is not involved in transfering your contact and calendaring records to an iPod - iTunes alone is responsible for this process.

Setting up to sync your iPod

If you do not have iTunes 4.8 or later installed on your computer, you can use iSync to transfer the contact and calendar information on your computer to your iPod. Before you can use iSync with your iPod, you need to add your iPod to iSync by following the instructions below. You need to do this only once.

If you have iTunes 4.8 or later, you use iTunes to transfer contacts and calendars to your iPod. For more information, open iTunes (in your Applications folder), and choose Help > "iTunes and Music Store Help."

To add your iPod to iSync:

1. Make sure you have the latest iPod software installed. Choose Apple menu > Software Update to see if there are any iPod software updates available.
2. Connect your iPod to your computer using the cable provided with your iPod.
3. Open iSync.
4. Choose Devices > Add Device, then double-click the iPod in the Add Device window.

An iPod appears in the iSync window.
