Time Machine and My Book World

In the article, it assumes that when you open Time Machine, you see the drive.

I do not see the drive in Time Machine.

I also note that in the article, it says that if this does not work, call apple as it is an apple related issue. I called apple and they say it is a WD related issue.

This is the problem, I can see it as a network drive in Finder, but not in Time Machine

Try this!

Click on MyBookWorld in the finder (under shared), click 'disconnect' from the top right (depending on finder view) of finder window- that button should change to 'connect as' - click it and authenticate as Name: wd_backup and Password: backup (both defaults that can be changed later)

You should now be able to see the backup volume in the time machine setup preference pane and setup as per usual ( you will need the name and password from before to access)

If you wish to learn more about the great features of this device just access the user manual from the Western Digital website. You can also access the advanced configuration from Safari by clicking the little open book symbol - under 'Bonjour' you will see a link to MyBookWorld

p.s just remembered you may need to update the firmware of you MyBookWorld so you will need to access the advanced configuration to do this- remember to have a hard connection (ethernet) to both the internet and the MyBookWorld when you do this 🙂

I have been frustrated by exactly the same issue as CP71.

I can see mybookworld as a server in Finder

I cannot see it in Time Machine

The firmware is up to date.

If someone could have idiot proof instructions on how to do WD mybookworld with a mac it would be appreciated.

What format is your WD drive? I had a similar problem when I moved from Windows to Mac, it would see my WD but I couldn't use it for Time Machine. I moved all my files off it, re-formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journalated) and then it appeared as a drive in TM setup.

To be honest I swapped it out for a Time Capsule in the end (2 x WD to be exact), they were causing things to slow down and it was annoying having them hanging from the USB ports all the time. Now everything runs quickly without the constant re-indexing of the WD drives and I have 2 free USB ports available.
