How do I find Network Key to add Brother MFC J651WD multifunc. printer to home network?

I have MacBook Pro 6.2, Airport Extreme (square one) working. Network is on. Trying to add Brother MFC J651DW. The Macbook can see the printer but no connect. The printer requests a network key which I cannot find. I've entered the SSID which works fine, and tried numerous other things for network key. No dice on the network key. Any suggestions are welcome!

I , too, trying to make my Brother HL45070 CDW printer on my wireless network

I have Airport Utility 6.1 (Mountain Lion)

There is NO manual set up!

The utility offers no tabs. Just a graphic depiction of my network

clicking on all the items listed offers much information but not a Newwork Key

Where do I find the Network Key?

Valdisfromrockyriver, Where did you find that log number?

The long "key" will rarely help, but it might be worth a try.

Open AirPort Utility, click on an AirPort device icon, then click Edit in the next box that appears.

Now, change the focus of your eyes all the way up to the very top of the computer screen to the menus...up where Help, Window, etc appear.

Click on the Base Station menu here

Click Show Passwords and the "key" will be revealed.

This is a Brother printer issue, to be sure but the PC nomenclature in the printer manual is confusing

I found, thank you, the Long key, painstakingly entered it (did that 2x, requiring easily a half an hour) and this was NOT what the printer wanted- of course I could not be certain if my long number has zeros or the letter "O".(I hate then there is not better differentiation, such as a slash through the character to show a numeral is required.

I then entered my network password and also ,the printer did not like it

The instruction book refers to Network Key = password = Encryption

So, I have tried the first two thingees, what is the Encryption?

Encruption is the network security > The thing thast is portecting you password from hackers.

If its an apple woruter its goign to be ising one of these three:

WPA

WPA 2 personal

WPA/WPA 2 Personal.

If you not sure

Go to appel icon > system preference > network > Selec wifi or airport in the left side and on the right side choose advance . int he perfered network list find you network name adn off to the right its will give you the type of security encryption your using

You won't believe this

I searched printer MFG site and found an illustrated manual on setting up wireless on my Brother Printer

I had been following the guide which came with printer; trying to set up quasi manually using the LED on the printer.Terse instructions

The website instructions referred to the CD which came with the printer .I had it and launched in my MBP

First of all, instruct on web was to clear the network card in the printer - a failed attempt to activate the wireless requires the reset ( printer manual said nothing of this)

Second- CD contained a wireless activations application which recognized my printer, and in only a few minutes I was set up

Network Key requested by brother IS the good ole network password which I know by heart.

Jeesh!

I think the real solution was not the CD appliation but the instruction to clear , reset the printer network card and the clarification tthat only the network password is needed,( readily found in Airport Utility or Keychain as others here have explained).

DId not need that huge multi charcter key ...

So I think I am now wireless with my Brother (that reads funny 🙂)

For anybody who having this problem and found this post on google:

First of all, ignore the manuals provided by Brother. They're out of date and confusing anyways. Second, don't bother with the CD that comes with the printer. Throw it away.

Follow these simple steps to get your Brother printer connectd to WIFI:

  1. First, connect your printer and computer with a USB cable (this is only temporary for setup — after wireless is setup you can unplug the USB). OS X may ask you if you want to download updates for the printer - do it!
  2. Go here and select your OS version: http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all . This page is for model HL-2270DW. Find the download page for your printer model if not this one.
  3. Download the Wireless Setup Wizard.
  4. Double-click the disk image (.dmg) file that you just downloaded and follow the instructions.
  5. Once complete, a Finder window will open with a single package (.pkg) file. Double-click it and follow the instructions.
  6. Once complete, another Finder window will open (Application > Brother > Utilities > WirelessDeviceSetupWizard). Select the direct for your printer model, and double-click "SetupWizard".
  7. You will be asked if you want to setup your printer with WPS or AOSS... ignore this. Select "No" and click "Next".
  8. You will be asked to check your network settings. I promise, you already have the information you need. Select "Checked and confirmed" and click "Next".
  9. Select "Temporary use a USB cable" for connection method, and click "Next".
  10. The wizard will begin searching for networks. When it's finished, select your network from the list (if your network doesn't show up, select "Advanced" and input the information. Option-Click your WiFi menu bar icon (at the top of the screen) to see the SSID and Channel (if necessary).
  11. Here's the part that confused me: It asks for your "Network Key". Yes, Airport devices have a "Network Key" (which can be found in Airport Utility, but you don't need it for this.) Just input your network password. This is the same password you use to connect to your WiFi network.
  12. Click "Next", confirm the settings, and you'll be done!

Excellent summary, Bricker88

- Simply put - when Brother asks for Network key = your network password

- when Brother asks for SSID = that is the NAME you gave your network!

( the Brother manual reference to "SSID" stumped me when i first set up my Brother laser printer

BTW-- if you lose your installation CD or DVD and if , as with my printer, you cannot find the wizard software on line,, you may be able easily set up your wireless, even sans USB cable, using the menu options built into the printer. The only annoying part is the need to input Password via the printer's + and - keys. (similar to the way we

Texted with those ole fashioned cell phones , tapping a key X number of times to input a particular letter or value)

The software spares you from this. So put that digital media somwhere safe = advice from this writer who lost hers 😟

The "key" is a long....64 characters....complex code comprised of letters and numbers that would rarely ever be needed to allow a device to connect to a wireless network. In fact, most devices do not have the ability to enter a 64 character code, even if the "key" is known. So, I doubt the "key" is really what you are looking for.

To see it though.....assuming that you are using a current or recent operating system on your Mac.....and not OS X (10.6.7) that you display in your profile.......

Open AirPort Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Now shift the focus of your eyes all the way to the uppermost top of the screen where the File, Edit, Window, Help menus are displayed

Click on the Base Station menu

Click Show Passwords and the "key" will be revealed

User uploaded file

If you really are still using OS X (10.6.x) on your Mac......

Open AirPort Utility

Click on the AirPort Extreme to select it

Click Manual Setup at the bottom of the page

Then click the Base Station menu at the top of the screen

Click Equivalent Network Password and the "key" will be revealed

Bottom line.....I doubt that having the "key" will help your issue, but anything is possible, I suppose. Post back if you need more assistance.
