Thanks you Lawrence for your reply - very helpful. But..... now I am being told that I have already purchsed the viber app so thats good but I can't see the icon anywhere. I have looked on all subsequent pages and there is no sign of it. therefore I cannot validate that it is installed

Please check if Viber is running in the background (Multitasking) by doubling clicking the round button.
Also, check all your folders for Viber's icon. If AppStore says you already purchased it, then it should be somewhere on your iPhone.
Alternately, try rebooting your iPhone, then connecting it to your computer and install Viber via iTunes.
