MacBook Pro screen goes black but keyboard is still backlit. Have to restart computer.

I've actually been experiencing the exact same problem. would love some answer if anyone has em. I was planning on taking it to an apple store this week to see whats going on.

I am right there with you. This has been happening for a few months and originally I thought it was an issue with Quickbooks. Numerouse calls to support have got nowhere. Latest suggestion they gave was to erase hard drive, reinstall system software, wait a few days and see if it happens. If not then restore from time capsule and see if it happens. Really like I have 5 days to mess with this.

Same here, so frustrating! Connecting a 27" LED display doesn't help. Keyboard and machine still alive. Perhaps need to shut down by ssh'ing into it when this happens--what a drag!

Well did a fresh install with LION - re-installed my Applications ( typical set ) and know seems to be worse with Lion .. happend like 10 times today at least and more since I loaded up lion...

As soon as I have a spare machine to use ( for work ) I am taking it to the store .. I am about doing with all of this crap...

Lion upgrade broke all my accounts and couldn't log in AD issue I heard ... then did the fresh install and now the Black screen of doom is worse ... FML

is this a mother board problem? (I have been there, done that and bought the bloody t-shirt) so I hope not.

The funny thing is, yesterday across the tabel for me, sits my girlfriend with the same macbook pro.

The screen on MacBook Pro is going black 3-4 times a day, It can happen in any program. I went to Apple service with turned of the option to shift between graphic carts. It did not solve the problem.

My screen still goes black, computer is still on, backlight on keyboard works up and down, Tried absolutely all options to get the screen back on. The only way to get the screen back on is to press down powerbutton for several seconds to force a shut down and then restart the computer.

I am now taking it back to Apple. I heard it might be the cable to screen, but it is not like a glip, it just go instantly black and does not go back on. It might be the motherboard as they say in this article. Lets see....

Sorry to say, YOU HAVE a motherCARD problem! they changed mine FOR FREE, not only on mine, but also my partners macs m-card. The M - Card blew on both at the SAME time? anyway, the apple shop in PARIS were very helpful and made my day. THAT is why I am a apple fan (at times)

Had the same problem with my Mac Pro Retina 2015 model. After trying almost everything (sic resets, reimage drive, etc) I took it back to the store. They sent it out for diag and it came back today with replaced Logic Board.

So far so good! No issues with display going black.
