WARNING - QuickTime 7.0.4 Problems - Update Erases Other Applications

I installed the QuickTime 7.0.4 update on both my 15" Powerbook and my new Quad Core. Upon reboot, the Entourage, Remote Desktop and Firefox applications were deleted from my Quad Core mysterously and both Tacktor and Last.FM's client were deleted from my laptop mysterously.

Both of the deletes happened immediately following the reboot after the install and I noted that the apps were missing by the grey ? mark left in there place in the doc.

DO NOT INSTALL QUICKTIME 7.0.4!!!!!!! I have lost 3 - 4K Pop 3 emails and all of my addresses tonight. There is a major problem with this update

Thanks for the answer.

First it is possible to uninstall 7.0.4 with an Apple uninstall program form 7.0.4 to 7.0.1 on http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.ht ml

The answer : Quicktime, iMovie, iPhoto etc where installed and very well working until I install QT 7.0.4 this morning when the Apple Upgrade Program tell me that there were new version of iTunes and quicktime. Before I had 7.0.3 without any problem. I must uninstall 7.0.4 because I did not find any other answer to solve the problem

First of all, there are a number of users reporting the same thing on both this board and on other boards as well. I don't have any reason to make this up. The problem was duplicated on two different systems over the span of a few hours.

Consider yourself lucky that it didn't happen to you and leave it at that. My applications were installed and working perfectly PRIOR to the update. In fact, I was using Entourage on the Quad immediately before rebooting.

wow! 500 responses... while many of you are responding to the initial poster's concerns, a good number of you are describing a problem that I was able to fix on my machine... the problem where your volume on QT streaming video drops out/local mpgs have no sound and the video pauses after 10 secs. QuickTimeKirk pointed out a fix that I posted the steps to in this thread:

Ordinarily, my response to Reyflem would have been identical to yours. However, after watching 2 different applications disappear from the Dock yesterday, I wondered what could have caused it. I did not make the immediate connection that installation of Quicktime had done it. I simply wondered as to the nature of this one of a kind fluke, and let it go at that. My subsequent difficulty with exporting a file in Quicktime Pro brought me to the Discussion Boards, where I found quite a few people stating that they had lost applications after installing the upgrade. Only then did I begin to put 2+2 together. Upon careful examination, I am unable to find a folder in which I had stored some disk images. So, I have to say that although it seems that there ought to be no logical connection between installing the upgrade and losing files, I cannot argue with my own experience. Hoping that this helps.

Have you checked to see if the Applications you are missing are still in the Applications folder (/Applications/...)? I had the same problem when Software Updating many apps, and my iMovie icon in the dock was replaced by the grey question mark. However, after going into my Applications folder I saw that iMovie was still there. I dragged it back into my Dock and dragged out the question mark icon and all was right with the world again. It appears to me that the update may have corrupted the Dock plist somehow, but did not actually delete my apps. Has anyone seen a complete removal of an app from the (/Applications/...) folder due to a software update? If you are seeing grey question marks in the dock it may be a corrupted link, and your app is still safe elsewhere.
