My laptop got stolen and I want to sync my current ipad with the new Macbook

Hi all,

Unfortunately, my previous macbook was stolen, and now I just bought the new one, and I would like to sync my iPad with this new laptop. However, when I plug the iPad, there was a message from iTunes saying that my iPad is not sync with this computer and asked if I want to "erase and sync" with this new computer. Actually, I re-download all the necessary applications to iTunes on the new Macbook already, but still am not sure whether this "erase and sync" will keep the data of my iPad. There are some data such as money transactions, passwords, and game saves, etc. which I do not want to lose and don't really have backups. Would "erase and sync" remove all data of current installed applications on the iPad? Is there a way to synchronize my iPad with this new Macbook without losing data?

Thanks,

Kann

Do not erase and sync. You need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account using your Apple ID from the old computer. You should also deauthorize the old computer in iTunes so no one can access your iTunes account and purchase music, apps, etc. Once you have authorized your iTunes account, your backups should be in tact and you should be good to go.....

When you press Cancel, does it not still mount your iPad in iTunes? I have a second laptop and it allows me to attach the iPad to it without asking to sync. I'm sure it asked to first time I connected but I do not really recall. Since that is your only copy of data, by all means get a second opinion from Apple but I think you can Cancel and the iPad will just mount in iTunes with no syncing options checked. You should see your home screen layouts and you should be able to transfer your installed apps and perform a backup. Anyway, good luck.

You should be able to ctrl-click on the iPad and do a Transfer Purchases and a Backup to copy stuff off of your iPad to the laptop. If you have documents for your apps, they should show up under the Apps tab. That should be a good indicator that your data has been backed up. I am not sure if there are other ways to verify the backup. Once you are comfortable, you can start turning on the Sync options you want and you should be back in business.

Even if you do not try the above on your own, these should at least be good talking points if you take your systems into the Apple Store.

What I meant was the data of applications themselves not the licenses of purchased apps. You can always transfer purchases to 5 devices at most, I think. About the applications' data, now the problem is partly fixed because some of the data is backed up on the iCloud.

In fact, I really didn't sync app via iTunes until Apple released iOS 5...
