Cannot update 3G iPhone or iPad to authorized computer. Have turned off firewall and computer times out or only receives four bars of downloads. Computer then hibernates and download is terminated. Ay ideas?

Have you also disabled your antivirus? Does the download from Apple to your computer terminate, or from the computer to the phone? Do you get any error messages? Is the iPhone connected directly to a USB port on the back of the computer and not to a hub?
...this may seem like its coming from left field, but is your computer more than a couple of years old, and does it have either a webcam or a Lexmark scanner attached?
The phone is connected to a USB port. Anti-virus is off. Laptop is over two years old but has no webcam. The back up mode shows only three bars of progress and it has been synced for the last hour and a half. Error message is received when phone is inadvertently disconnected stating that all data will be lost if backup continues.

My iPhone 3G cannot update. Has turned off firewall w/o success. Computer hibernates before download. Haven't been able to update for almost a year. Any suggestions?
