Same thing. This is horrible! It's doing more harm than good really. Apple *****, I've been wanting to get a Droid for months. I know the feel.
What would be doing more harm than good would be to tell users their content was secure when it really wasn't.

Jan 27, 2016 3:37 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby random42,Yes, iCloud appears to be the only option.
I went to apple store to invite them to use a computer of their own that I'd never touched to try the backup/restore with iTunes,
they told me to use iCloud ;-)
So I gave up and did that.

I already explained why using a computer that was never backed up to would still created a passcoded backup, but I guess you just post without reading replies.

Jan 31, 2016 10:59 AM in response to buckeye89by kbh1,Hi all. I figured it out. Try your older apple ID passwords. the restore is looking for the original apple ID password. I also tried restoring the phone again and using the backup but the password was still not being recognized. I used one of my older apple ID passwords and it worked.

Feb 4, 2016 3:06 PM in response to shautzeetigeroreo22by madmaz99,Thanks... your suggestion helped me
I logged in with my gmail password, which i'm pretty certain I wouldn't have used as a password because I never use it for anything and had to think for a minute to even remember what the password was

Mar 8, 2016 1:12 PM in response to random42by prometheus75,I solve this problem very unusual way. I tried to do all suggestions. but all of them failed.
there is a problem in my iphone. I applied to the help desk but before I go I backed it up. but I saw that help desk was restored the iphone to the initial format. I've lost all my data. I thought that, I can recover from my backup. But itunes asked me to write password. non of my old/new passwords worked. I decided to change the strategy. I unchecked the "encrypt backup" first, then I tried to restore with useless passwords, then, I checked "encrypt backup" then itunes asked me to enter new passwords twice, I entered new password. then it started to backup my phone, but I disconnected the iphone, then itunes terminated the backup process. then I tried to restore from old backup. it asked the password again, I wrote the new password and luckily it worked:)

Here is how to recover iPhone backup password on a Mac:
When you enter your password to encrypt your Iphone backup on your Mac it stores the backup password on your macs keychain.
Click on help on the main desktop to find where your keychain passwords are stored.
Look for the iPhone backup password.
To reveal it, it will ask you for the login password for your Mac.
Viola - there's your backup's password.
End of thread.
This is one of the benefits to store important accounts on keychain. However, this only works on Mac. For Windows users, the only solution is to find the right password to unlock backup file.

Mar 11, 2016 5:19 AM in response to buckeye89by Ilya from Tokyo,I got the same problem. Swapped my iphone in Apple store, got home and tried to restore the backup.
Itunes asked for the password. I did not recall setting any so I panicked, came to this forums and the others alike, tried all my passwords, all the solutions mentioned here - nothing worked. Even started looking at password cracking software.
I was battling this problem for the past three days when a coworker asked me if I tried entering the password with capslock on. And....IT DID IT! In the end it was my regular itunes password BUT WITH CAPSLOCK TURNED ON!!!! Try it!
There are many theories here, people suggesting trying different passwords, pass codes etc. There is no secret here, there is no bug - YOU SET THAT PASSWORD! Just try entering the password you usually use, try with/without capslock, all registers and you will get it. Remember, it is something you set yourself! Meditate for 30 min, remember it and enter it! Hope that helps.

Mar 20, 2016 1:44 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby lasublime,Don't know exactly what it was in what you said that made me finally try my password for my external backup disc, but I did and it work. I never entered that as my passcode and I would never have thought of using it , but bingo it worked.

Mar 27, 2016 7:06 PM in response to kbh1by zioncanyon,This was very frustrating. I never set a password for the backup. I repeat: I never set a password for the backup. ITunes chose the password for me. It was my old apple ID password. I just changed it two months ago, but luckily I remember it. Again, the password for a backup just created today was my old apple password from two months ago, and I never told iTunes to do that.

Your post is very frustrating. iTunes does not set passwords. I repeat: iTunes does not set passwords. iTunes does not choose passwords. Again, the password was not just created today if it existed two months ago and iTunes never did anything.
